Its arguments are subtle and its author strives to give a fair hearing to all the views that he considers.Marc Shapiro's famous work on the limits of Orthodoxy already lays out some of the doctrinal questions that Orthodoxy as a whole hasn't really settled - but that work applies to Orthodoxy as a whole.There are also important volumes that try to give us a clear idea of what it is that Modern Orthodoxy stands for and believes. Rabbi Norman Lamm's Torah U'Madda is a stand out example of that genre.Rabbi Harris, on the other hand, has attempted something distinctive and new. One way to really understand Modern Orthodoxy as a living and evolving movement, is to come to terms with the very particular issues that set it on fire; the issues that it hasn't yet resolved; the issues that Modern Orthodox thinkers are characteristically grappling with. The first is that it's chapter on women's issues strikes me as insufficiently strident; this is probably because Rabbi Harris is always eager to present balanced and fair arguments, and to be representing Modern Orthodoxy, and not Open Orthodoxy (which may or may not be a different movement altogether - Rabbi Harris discusses this issue himself). On the other hand, it might be evidence of the fact that Rabbi Harris is writing in the United Kingdom, where the debate around the role of women within Modern Orthodox Jewish life does seem to be somewhat behind the state of the debate in the USA and Israel.Most books on Modern Orthodoxy would probably ignore the issue of mysticism, since most Modern Orthodox Jews (outside of certain neo-Hassidic fringes, and besides the intellectual heirs of Rabbi Kook in Israel) ignore most manifestations of mysticism in their own lives. Rabbi Harris is to be commended for including a chapter on the tension between Modern Orthodoxy and mysticism. But, my second criticism of the book is that, after documenting the dangers that mysticism can pose, I fear he may have paid insufficient attention to the important role that mysticism can play in creating people who are animated by the love and fear of God - an animation that is all too often lacking in many Modern Orthodox communities outside of Israel. This criticism was only heightened by the fact that in the few sentences in which he paid attention to this power that mysticism holds, Rabbi Harris was able to express so eloquently his own spiritual sensibilities that one was left wanting to hear more on that front.Like my second criticism, my final criticism is really a sort of praise: there are times where this book leaves you wanting more. That's probably only because what we've been given is so well written and so well researched, we're left disappointed, at the end, to find that we've finished such an engaging book. Furthermore the issues at the heart of the book were chosen because they've not been resolved within Modern Orthodoxy. So, if you're looking for a complete sense of resolution at the end of the book, then you're looking in the wrong place! But, the feeling that one wants more is also down to the fact that there are so many other issues that are burning and unresolved at the heart of Modern Orthodox, all of which are calling out for the same measured treatment that is on show in this book. If anything, my final criticism is more of a plea for a second volume!!Ending on a positive note: the chapter on academic Biblical studies is a tour de force. I know of no work that takes this issue on, from an unapologetically Modern Orthodox perspective, in such an accessible, concise and yet profoundly strident way. This book is an excellent synopsis of the "hot" issues facing modern orthodoxy today and presents viable paths through them. Harris' breadth of reading and knowledge is extremely impressive and the voluminous foodnotes should provide ample further study for the interested reader.The writing style is clear and lucid and the book is easily digested. A legitimate criticism of modern orthodoxy is that its high priests tend to write in an obscure and inaccessible writing style. This book is exactly the opposite and summarises fairly complex arguments in a simple fashion. Highly recommended to anyone as a reference and as a synopsis of the state of play as it stands currently.

I would not recommend this book. Harris does touch upon important issues, with the operative word being touch. He offers no new observations, no insights, and no new conceptual frameworks with which to consider the status of women in Judaism, Biblical authorship, and the role of Jewish Mysticism in Judaism. There are a lot of good books that treat these issues comprehensively - both in breadth and depth - but not this one. In fact, Harris hangs on to the coat-tails of these other authors by extensively quoting them throughout his book and as such his bibliography - while not exhaustive - has some value.Anyone who reads Norman Lamm, Natan Slifkin, David Berger, Jim Kugel, Blu Greenberg, Tamar Ross, Tova Hartman, David Hartman, Marc Shapiro, and Lawrence Kaplan amongst others will get a lot more bang for their buck than “Faith Without Fear.” The book runs about 125 pages (without footnotes) so it is light-weight, both literally and figuratively. It is possible that a convert to Judaism who knows nothing about these issues could benefit from the Cook’s tour the book provides but for me it was a waste of time reading it and a waste of money buying it.

The surprise gift turns out to be wonderful, exciting, and it gives you an enormous amount of pleasure, you know? Well that’s what happened to the publishing world and a giant number of readers in 2009.Michael Crichton had a literary gift far too often nonexistent in a lot of writers. He was, first and foremost, a teller of stories. He could tell stories better than almost anyone. It’s almost like you didn’t read his books, he was in the room telling you the story. He had a limitless imagination. Crichton was the only creative artist to have a #1 TV show, ER (he created it), a #1 movie, Jurassic Park, and a #1 book, Disclosure, all at the same time. Michael Crichton passed away in 2008. One of his assistants was organizing the papers in Mr. Crichton’s office. When he opened the computer that Crichton used to compose his books he found the surprise gift. There was a completely finished novel that he never talked about and also a partially finished book saved on the computer. The finished book was Pirate Latitudes. It was published in 2009 and sped up the charts. Steven Spielberg secured the film rights and intends to make a movie based on the book. I have read almost everything Michael Crichton has written but never this one. There it was in the bargain bin for a $1.00. That was my surprise gift. I took it home and didn’t put it down for two days. Even forgot to eat lunch on the second day, LOL. I absolutely loved it. This is something of an historical novel. The main plot actually happened and the main character, Captain Charles Hunter, is more or less based on the famous pirate Henry Morgan. Captain Hunter is hired by the Governor of Jamaica to plunder a Spanish galleon laden with gold and silver stolen from the inhabitants of South and Central America.Hunter was a privateer not a pirate. (They convinced themselves there was a difference.) Privateers, like some pirates, were incredibly democratic in how they conducted business. The whole crew shared in the plunder according to his station on the ship so if it was a great haul, everyone got rich. The Captain ruled by election. If the crew wanted another Captain they were given the right to vote on whomever they wanted in the job. Hunter provisioned his ship in the pirate city of Port Royal, Jamaica. That’s where he got the very colorful crew as well. They were to make way to the Spanish island fortress of Matanceros. It was a Spanish stronghold in the Caribbean, very well defended with huge guns lording over the bay and hundreds of well-trained soldiers. The city was built at the end of the bay with its back to a very large hill. The back of the hill, the other side of the island, was impregnable. It was a sheer vertical cliff. The galleon was anchored in the bay. The problem was how to get the gold from a place that was unassailable. This is where the story turns into something like thieves robbing a bank in the guise of a pirate story. It’s a caper and you won’t find anything like Captain Jack Sparrow here. This isn’t your kids’ Pirates of the Caribbean. These pirates are violent killers, full of lust, probably sociopaths, cunning and very, very dangerous. How Captain Hunter solves the problem of separating the gold from the Spanish ship is ingenious. It comes out in the story that his parents brought him to American as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were pretty well off so they sent him to a new school in Boston, Harvard. There he was taught critical thinking and problem solving using logic learned from Greek writers. He puts all of this to good use. They set sail. The adventure begins and it’s splendid. They bump into many obstacles, not the least of which is being captured by a Spanish war ship commanded by Hunter’s nemesis who is also commander of the fort at Matanceros. That’s when everything becomes very personal for both men. As the Brits say, this is a ripping yarn. I’m sad that Michael Crichton is not with us because Captain Hunter could sure use a sequel. Pirate Latitudes does feel a bit rushed at the end and I think that Mr. Crichton probably would have done another polishing draft but this is a mighty entertaining saga and more than worth the price of admission.

I’ve been on a pirate kick lately for some reason, and in general I find Crichton’s books fun, inventive, and well-written. But this book was found in his files after his death. It reads well, there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. But, as Entertainment Weekly said back in 2009, “If nothing else, Pirate Latitudes is a reminder of the importance of picking an ironclad password for your computer.”It reads like a young adult adventure novel, which isn’t a bad thing. I’m sure many 14-year-old adventurers-to-be will enjoy and have loved it. Crichton fans were thrilled when a last novel was found, no doubt, despite a sea of pirate sailing jingo like ”Mizzen top blown!”But there is a reason Crichton never released it. And it probably starts with “re” and ends with “write.”

This is Crichton's last book and he veered into historical fiction - Pirates. I read reviews that somewhat sniffed at this book, claiming it must have been instead one of his first books. Well, surprise! I enjoyed this book very much. I liked the characters, good and bad. I liked the descriptive locals and the subdued politics of living in the Caribbean and dealing with swashbuckling pirates/privateers fighting for the crown against Spain. It was a story of pure escapism and it was nice to dive into the lives of men and women trying to make a living...even if they were Pirates. I especially liked LaZue, a female pirate who could guide a ship between rocks and not even scrape the sides. The characters were well written; Crichton put emotions and feelings into real people who are now long gone. When you want to slip away to a place you've never been before, and a time that is long since past, delve into this and just enjoy it. It's escapism at it's best.

This was a surprise novel, coming from Crichton, and probably written as a lighthearted homage to the historical adventure genre'. It's a very quick read and full of the fights and adventure you'd expect from a pirate yarn.Aside from the well-written plot, a pirate journey to attack a fortified Spanish island and take over a treasure galleon, the thing that impresses is Crichton's trademark: very good research into the subject (pirates, Port Royal, sailing, etc.) that gives authenticity to the story. In fact the epilogue gives some biographical information to flesh out the characters lives after the time of the story. It left me wondering if Crichton had actually researched the lives of living characters and written his story based on their lives. I intend to do some research myself to satisfy my curiosity.However, the one reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was the ridiculous inclusion of a personal fight between the hero, Capt. Hunter and a Kraken, the mythical giant octopus that attacks his boat. It reminded me of the cartoon scene inserted into the Monty Python movie, Life of Brian. It was totally unnecessary and broke the suspension of disbelief so important to the reading of fiction.

This was written after Chrichton's death, so I'm assuming that was the reason for my disappointment with it. It ends abruptly and the wrap up at the end seems like it was added by someone else.The writing was fine and I enjoyed the characters. The novel was well-researched though the ship and crew must have experienced every pirate cliche in this novel. That's not to say that their experiences weren't enjoyable. There were clever escapes and fights, brawls and duels enough. If you want to read some fine pirate novels, try Sabatini. He's the master.

That in itself isn't a problem -- but if you then hit Return and start typing, your new paragraph will be in Normal as well. (This is another reason to stick to the paragraph format setting "Page break before" to start a new page.) You can change all paragraphs already in Normal style to a different one by using the Format menu in the Find and Replace dialog. Don't enter any text, but place your cursor in first the Find box and then the Replace while choosing a style for each. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #2 To save you some grief, I'll warn you right now that testing your Go To menu items may not do you much good. For example, due to numerous bugs, they are unlikely to work right or at all in files generated or even just viewed with Amazon's desktop Kindle Previewer. Your best bet is to test on a hardware Kindle with a preview copy converted on the Amazon KDP site. But even if you get everything to test perfectly, it may mean nothing, because Amazon KDP staff may manually change the "start" location after publication. Yes, they may simply move it where they think it should be, and without telling you! (As far-fetched as this sounds, it is not speculation. KDP staff will confirm this themselves, if you ask them -- as I have.) The only way to know if this has happened is to get a copy after the book has gone on sale. If you discover a change at that point, all you can do is ask KDP staff to change it back -- in the hope they'll comply -- or else send the book through again -- in the hope it will be treated better the next time. But on the Kindle as in life, there are no guarantees. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #3 There's a great deal of confusion about Kindle tables of contents, and for good reason: There are actually two different kinds, and a Kindle book may have one, both, or neither. (Try to get Amazon to explain that to you!) The first kind is an HTML table of contents, also called embedded, internal, or inline. When you export to HMTL, Word will generate one from a linked table of contents you've constructed on a page of your source document. Creating that table in Word is the subject of this section, while the next one tells how to get a link to your table of contents from the Kindle's Go To menu. The HTML table of contents is the only kind you can export from Word. The second kind is an NCX table of contents, also called logical. NCX stands for "navigation control file for XML" or such, and it is a special type of file included in ebooks. The NCX file can be used to place content items like chapter headings directly onto the Kindle's Go To menu as a shortcut for readers. It can also set jump points for Kindles with physical navigation controllers. While an NCX table of contents is a nice convenience, you don't really need one, as long as you have the HTML table. But besides that, there is no way to generate an NCX table with Word alone. Creating the NCX file requires special ebook software or hand-building in HTML -- well beyond the scope of this book. So, if you're trying to keep things simple, I suggest you forget about NCX tables of contents. There's another reason you might want to ignore them: In late 2013, Amazon has been adding an NCX table of contents automatically to at least some books submitted without one. Chapter headings and other phrases might now be added to the Go To menu some time after publication -- not just by the time the book goes on sale!  If you see such items in the menu for this book, that's how they got there. Â

One of Aaron's earlier books, Aiming at Amazon: The NEW Business of Self Publishing, or How to Publish Your Books with Print on Demand and Online Book Marketing on Amazon.com, was essential when I was graduating from being published by traditional publishers to being independently published by Create Space. That's been a huge success. I've never looked back.Now that I'm converting some of my older books to Kindle format, and writing new books specifically for Kindle, I knew I should see what Aaron says about that. I was correct, and the price of this Kindle book was a pleasant surprise, as well.I've found four major points that I'd overlooked when submitting earlier books to Kindle. Those books could have looked much better, and I may go back and reformat them following Aaron's advice. I'm not sure, yet.Though I'm on the fence about spaces between paragraphs in Kindle books -- frankly, I find it easier to read with the breaks -- I found several other formatting issues that I hadn't thought about before, and each of them is very important.Even if you're pretty sure that you know what you're doing with Kindle books, it's worth spending $1 to be absolutely sure. If you're like me, you'll be very glad that you did.I rarely give any book a five-star review, but this one comes close enough that I wish Amazon offered us a four-and-a-half-star option.

Version reviewed: 3.3.1, © 2011-2014.This weekend, I finally bit the bullet and accepted Aaron’s last bit of advice: place the table of contents (TOC) first. I hated to do this in a classic edition, but it was the only way I could get Amazon to set the Start Reading Location (SRL) close to where I wanted it to be: Don Quijote 1 & 2: Español - English (Spanish Edition)At this point, I don’t know if my relocation of the TOC took or not. As Aaron points out in his book, once you buy a copy of your own book, you can’t see what additional changes look like. You have to ask Amazon to replace your previous copy with your current copy. (If there are imperfections in my display or formatting, I can always blame Amazon for not letting me control them, but the most likely reality is that it’s my own fault for not following Aaron’s instructions to the letter.)Anyway, I can’t say enough good things about Aaron’s book. You can look at my book if you’d like to see the ~80% effectiveness of his recommendations for publishing using ONLY his MS Word edits, and not doing anything in HTML. I found his HTML book a bit beyond my reach. I found his MS Word edits to be easy to follow and delivering as promised in terms of left justification, style formats, and line spacing. All of these were extremely important to me since I was working with separate fonts for two languages, reduced fonts for chapter summaries, and hyperlinks all over the place to keep it together.If I have any criticism of Aaron’s book, it’s of the author himself. He seems to rejoice more in complaining than fixing the problem. The problem is Amazon’s one-size-fits-all approach to text justification and SRL. The solution is finding the right person in Amazon to bring up his (our) concerns. Surely Amazon is smart enough to offer the publisher a choice in how the text is displayed and starting location for reading when the book is first opened.The much touted ‘Enhanced Typesetting’ is Amazon’s solution to the small screen size offered by most reading devices. By forcing justification to both margins, large spacing between words is a given if the reader enlarges the text. Personally, I haven’t found this to be a problem in romance novels or mysteries--the two bestselling categories in Amazon. It is a major problem for books like mine, where there are lots of large words, which makes for serious space distortions if I were forced to use the ‘Enhanced Typesetting’. (The real solution would be left-justification with hyphenation for the most common words, but this is a functionality that’s beyond us at this point.)But using Aaron’s guidance, I could left justify through the whole book. You can do the same and more if you read “From Word to Kindle”. Hopefully someone at Amazon will be smart enough to bring Aaron on board as a consultant. He’s that good. His sense of independence and perfectionism may not allow for this, but it would certainly be my recommendation. (PS - the guidance put out by KDP is basic, out-of-date, and Microsoftesque in being technically correct but totally useless. Aaron on board, and this problem goes away.)All in all, this is a great book for guidance on formatting for Amazon. It’s the only book that I needed. Look no further if you want to publish an eBook.[BTW, I came across a book this week that opens on the title page--the logical location for beginning any book:Mountain Conquests . Don’t know how they did it, but it shows that it is possible to set a SRL. But as Aaron points out in his book, you’ll drive yourself crazy if you look for perfection in eBooks. So letting my book go as is...]So why only 3 stars. Three stars so that someone may actually read this review. Any more than that, and this review will taken as spam.

This book answered the questions I had in an intelligent, well-written way and was my companion as I published my first important Kindle book. If you don't care that much how your book looks on the kindle, this isn't the book for you. But if you have a book that needs to be published so that it looks professional and doesn't have rookie formatting errors messing up the flow, Aaron Shepard's book is a good one.I will add that this was NOT the only book I bought on how to format for kindle. This was actually my third. But the other two were so full of grammatical errors, typos and translation issues and missing some essential information, I had to turn to a third book to solve the spacing issues I was having. I wish I would have started with this one.
