As far as I'm aware, there is no other book on the market that attempts, in anything like a systematic way, to lay out the philosophical and theological issues that still divide Modern Orthodoxy.The book is beautifully written and meticulously researched. Its arguments are subtle and its author strives to give a fair hearing to all the views that he considers.Marc Shapiro's famous work on the limits of Orthodoxy already lays out some of the doctrinal questions that Orthodoxy as a whole hasn't really settled - but that work applies to Orthodoxy as a whole.There are also important volumes that try to give us a clear idea of what it is that Modern Orthodoxy stands for and believes. Rabbi Norman Lamm's Torah U'Madda is a stand out example of that genre.Rabbi Harris, on the other hand, has attempted something distinctive and new. One way to really understand Modern Orthodoxy as a living and evolving movement, is to come to terms with the very particular issues that set it on fire; the issues that it hasn't yet resolved; the issues that Modern Orthodox thinkers are characteristically grappling with. It is these issues that Rabbi Harris documents and begins to explore in this scholarly but accessible volume.This book took bravery to write, because a Modern Orthodox Rabbi, serving in a Modern Orthodox community, is on the front lines of some of the battles that this book explores. To take a public stance on some of these issues is sometimes to invite public censure. In the simple act of writing this book, Rabbi Harris demonstrates what it means to have faith without fear.He argues that no form of Orthodoxy can claim to be ideologically pure because every Jewish thinker has to make certain choices, prioritising some parts of the tradition over others. In putting forth such an argument, Rabbi Harris demonstrates that his brand of Modern Orthodoxy is not cowering in fear of the Ultra-Orthodox, who many people, even within Modern Orthodoxy, naturally view as the most authentic brand of Judaism.I only have three minor criticisms of the book. The first is that it's chapter on women's issues strikes me as insufficiently strident; this is probably because Rabbi Harris is always eager to present balanced and fair arguments, and to be representing Modern Orthodoxy, and not Open Orthodoxy (which may or may not be a different movement altogether - Rabbi Harris discusses this issue himself). On the other hand, it might be evidence of the fact that Rabbi Harris is writing in the United Kingdom, where the debate around the role of women within Modern Orthodox Jewish life does seem to be somewhat behind the state of the debate in the USA and Israel.Most books on Modern Orthodoxy would probably ignore the issue of mysticism, since most Modern Orthodox Jews (outside of certain neo-Hassidic fringes, and besides the intellectual heirs of Rabbi Kook in Israel) ignore most manifestations of mysticism in their own lives. Rabbi Harris is to be commended for including a chapter on the tension between Modern Orthodoxy and mysticism. But, my second criticism of the book is that, after documenting the dangers that mysticism can pose, I fear he may have paid insufficient attention to the important role that mysticism can play in creating people who are animated by the love and fear of God - an animation that is all too often lacking in many Modern Orthodox communities outside of Israel. This criticism was only heightened by the fact that in the few sentences in which he paid attention to this power that mysticism holds, Rabbi Harris was able to express so eloquently his own spiritual sensibilities that one was left wanting to hear more on that front.Like my second criticism, my final criticism is really a sort of praise: there are times where this book leaves you wanting more. That's probably only because what we've been given is so well written and so well researched, we're left disappointed, at the end, to find that we've finished such an engaging book. Furthermore the issues at the heart of the book were chosen because they've not been resolved within Modern Orthodoxy. So, if you're looking for a complete sense of resolution at the end of the book, then you're looking in the wrong place! But, the feeling that one wants more is also down to the fact that there are so many other issues that are burning and unresolved at the heart of Modern Orthodox, all of which are calling out for the same measured treatment that is on show in this book. If anything, my final criticism is more of a plea for a second volume!!Ending on a positive note: the chapter on academic Biblical studies is a tour de force. I know of no work that takes this issue on, from an unapologetically Modern Orthodox perspective, in such an accessible, concise and yet profoundly strident way. This book is an excellent synopsis of the "hot" issues facing modern orthodoxy today and presents viable paths through them. Harris' breadth of reading and knowledge is extremely impressive and the voluminous foodnotes should provide ample further study for the interested reader.The writing style is clear and lucid and the book is easily digested. A legitimate criticism of modern orthodoxy is that its high priests tend to write in an obscure and inaccessible writing style. This book is exactly the opposite and summarises fairly complex arguments in a simple fashion. Highly recommended to anyone as a reference and as a synopsis of the state of play as it stands currently.
I would not recommend this book. Harris does touch upon important issues, with the operative word being touch. He offers no new observations, no insights, and no new conceptual frameworks with which to consider the status of women in Judaism, Biblical authorship, and the role of Jewish Mysticism in Judaism. There are a lot of good books that treat these issues comprehensively - both in breadth and depth - but not this one. In fact, Harris hangs on to the coat-tails of these other authors by extensively quoting them throughout his book and as such his bibliography - while not exhaustive - has some value.Anyone who reads Norman Lamm, Natan Slifkin, David Berger, Jim Kugel, Blu Greenberg, Tamar Ross, Tova Hartman, David Hartman, Marc Shapiro, and Lawrence Kaplan amongst others will get a lot more bang for their buck than “Faith Without Fear.†The book runs about 125 pages (without footnotes) so it is light-weight, both literally and figuratively. It is possible that a convert to Judaism who knows nothing about these issues could benefit from the Cook’s tour the book provides but for me it was a waste of time reading it and a waste of money buying it.
