I did it all wrong. I was lost and fumbling and following every wayward advice out there that pretty much yielded no results. Yeah, I picked up a couple books, but most were so wordy and long-winded it sucked the life out of me. A total snooze. Not to mention uninformative. When KILL YOUR CONVERSION KILLERS went up for sale, I admit I was a little reluctant, but also desperate and hopeful.Man, oh man, this book is so worth it. Joris Bryon’s writing is sharp, to-the-point, and best of all, educational. In less than a year, I have redesigned my site twice, which only served to worsen my conversions. I didn’t understand why. This book showed me that I was doing it all wrong, all the obvious mistakes I’ve made, and has offered pragmatic methods instead.Eagerness and hunger for knowledge flipped these pages for me. So informative, insightful and practical that I read it all in two sittings.I closed this book more knowledgeable than I was before I opened it, and with complete confidence in the Dexter Method. Finally, I get it.If you are struggling with your conversions as I was, then do not hesitate to grab this book. It delivers.

Before reading this book, I thought we were doing pretty well when it came to conversion optimisation. Now I realise we were merely scratching the surface. One of the most valuable things in the book is the process the author uses to research what's going wrong. it goes far deeper than browsing Google Analytics to find things to do. This process will help you dig into the what and why of problems on the site.Since finishing the book, I've gone back through one of our sites and thanks to the book we've already identified areas we were completely overlooking. We're currently gathering more input with a variety of the research tools described in the book. So I hope to report good results in a few week's time!

As an eCommerce business owner who started out over 9 years ago, I really wish I had access to such a concise source of information back then. When it comes to CRO, I feel that there is still, as was the case back then, a gap when it comes to great resources that are geared towards eCommerce.Kill Your Conversion Killers goes a good way to filling that gap.CRO encompasses a broad range of complex skill sets and this book manages to bring these elements together well in a very cohesive manner, painting an overall picture the mindset and approach required when it comes to growing eCommerce businesses through CRO.What then follows is a practical guide on how to actually execute CRO through the help of a framework coined "The Dexter Method". Call it what you will (and no doubt many others have their own frameworks / methods) but in essence it's a simple, easy to follow framework that allows you to reliably and systematically keep improving your eCommerce results. I find it one of the better frameworks out there because it really gets to the point quickly and avoids unnecessary distractions. This is particularly good for those just starting out or those who have been at it for a while but only achieved middling results. It is easy to get overwhelmed with CRO (shiny tools, 'advanced techniques' etc.) but Joris wisely makes a point of reminding people along the way about sticking to the fundamentals so as to keep you on track and getting wins.I'd highly recommend this book to:- eCommerce business owners wanting to understand the importance of CRO- CRO professionals wanting to sharpen their existing tool set, especially when it comes to systematising processes and workflows so they can get reliable and repeatable results for their clients- CRO professionals that struggle to communicate the value of CRO to prospective clients (I believe it's a short enough read to hand to clients) or internal stakeholders

I've read a lot of material on ecommerce conversion optimization and digital marketing, and I can really say that the Dexter Method is something special. It provides a step by step guide on how to sell more online with real world applicability. After reading it I have a much better understanding of how to approach A/B testing in a pragmatic and process driven way (instead of just operating on instinct). It helped me to understand the importance of operating in a data-driven way, and using a scientific method when designing and executing split tests. This is a great guide for consultants, inhouse digital marketing teams and freelancers who want specific instructions on how to increase conversions. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed reading this book. There's a lot of information out there on how you should optimize your site, which sometimes can be overwhelming. But the Dexter Method makes it a lot easier by bringing it all together. It's an easy process that you can follow to get more conversions from your site. On top of that, Bryon's style is clear and to-the-point, which makes this book a must-read for every e-commerce owner who wants to get started with conversion optimization.

Even if you don't manage a web shop, this ebook is recommended. Use it as a litmus test to recognize the CRO pretenders from the pack. Joris' no-nonsense approach guides ecommerce owners avoid the pitfalls in creating better conversion rates (read: more revenues). By using a simple but effective process ("The DEXTER Method"), he combines agile principles with hard science. By asking the right questions and looking for the right data (not opinions), Joris introduces the right mindset for everyone who wants to increase funnel flow. With this book he practices what he preaches: I've read it till the end.

Joris is doing a great job explaining how the Dexter Method can help e-commerce owners convert more of their existing traffic. It is an easy read even though he really goes into detail. It was easy to follow and full of examples and images. Kill Your Conversion Killers is a great read if you wanna find out how conversion optimization and A/B testing works or if you wanna train your in-house team in converting more of your traffic into sales.

Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche, by Haruki Murakami

From Publishers Weekly

On March 20, 1995, followers of the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo unleashed lethal sarin gas into cars of the Tokyo subway system. Many died, many more were injured. This is acclaimed Japanese novelist Murakami's (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, etc.) nonfiction account of this episode. It is riveting. What he mostly does here, however, is listen to and record, in separate sections, the words of both victims, people who "just happened to be gassed on the way to work," and attackers. The victims are ordinary people bankers, businessmen, office workers, subway workers who reflect upon what happened to them, how they reacted at the time and how they have lived since. Some continue to suffer great physical disabilities, nearly all still suffer great psychic trauma. There is a Rashomon-like quality to some of the tales, as victims recount the same episodes in slightly different variations. Cumulatively, their tales fascinate, as small details weave together to create a complex narrative. The attackers are of less interest, for what they say is often similar, and most remain, or at least do not regret having been, members of Aum. As with the work of Studs Terkel, which Murakami acknowledges is a model for this present work, the author's voice, outside of a few prefatory comments, is seldom heard. He offers no grand explanation, no existential answer to what happened, and the book is better for it. This is, then, a compelling tale of how capriciously and easily tragedy can destroy the ordinary, and how we try to make sense of it all. (May 1)Forecast: Publication coincides with the release of a new novel by Murakami (Sputnik Sweetheart, Forecasts, Mar. 19), and several national magazines, including Newsweek and GQ, will be featuring this fine writer. This attention should help Murakami's growing literary reputation. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

The deadly Tokyo subway poison gas attack, perpetrated by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult on March 20, 1995, was the fulfillment of every urban straphanger's nightmare. Through interviews with several dozen survivors and former members of Aum, novelist Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) presents an utterly compelling work of reportage that lays bare the soul of contemporary Japan in all its contradictions. The sarin attack exposed Tokyo authorities' total lack of preparation to cope with such fiendish urban terrorism. More interesting, however, is the variety of reactions among the survivors, a cross-section of Japanese citizens. Their individual voices remind us of the great diversity within what is too often viewed from afar as a homogeneous society. What binds most of them is their curious lack of anger at Aum. Chilling, too, is the realization that so many Aum members were intelligent, well-educated persons who tried to fill voids in their lives by following Shoko Asahara, a mad guru who promised salvation through total subordination to his will. I read this because I love Murakami. I had never heard of the Tokyo gas attacks, and now am frankly pretty surprised it had never come up in the US.Anyhow, Murakami mostly stays out of his subjects' ways in the first portion of the book. He lets survivors speak for themselves and neither he nor the translator make many intrusions, unless it's to clarify some detail (usually the translator notes are for people like me who don't have any background knowledge about the attacks). It's really interesting to see how people viewed the same situation differently--there are several times when one survivor will describe a person that later tells their own story of the event, and both are pretty different. Despite this being a really cool perspective, it can get a tiny bit repetitive, but it's worth it to stick it out and finish the book. The last section of the book is Murakami's reflections on what the gas attacks meant in the broader context of Japanese society and interviews with ex and current Aum members. During this, he waxes philosophical about his own complex relationship with his home country. As a western fan who has never visited Japan I found this fascinating. It's easy to pick up on themes feeling isolated or like something is wrong in your society (or the way you relate to it) in his other books, but it was very interesting to see him speak directly about these thoughts. He's more intrustive in the Aum section, which I actually appreciate--his anger at the naive beleifs that led to so many deaths is palpable, and most of his interviewees don't shrink back from it.Overall, a really good read if you're interested in Japan, terrorism, cults or just Haruki Murakami.

The novel starts off a bit slow as it focuses on the those personally affected by the crime. It picks up steam as he delves into the cult members. Most are extremely odd and delusional, which is to be expected. Murakami allows them to open up and express their strange and twisted perspectives......which does make for an interesting read. I really enjoyed this nonfiction effort from my new favorite author. Another example where "Truth can be be stranger then fiction"

Quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. I feel haunted by it - by both the stories of the survivors of the Tokyo subway attack, and by the interviews with the Aum members. And Murakami's own thoughts were brilliant and thought-provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone, even if you're not interested in the subject - it was honestly THAT good.

The Nobel Prize in Literature should be in the future for Huraki Murakami; it is past-due. Frankly, I had no particular interest in further exploring the underground sarin attack in Japan until I saw the author's name. I buy and read any book that he has written. Each one brings some new intriguing, creative and challenging plot. Often they are so complex that a second or even a third reading is rewarding - such as Kafka on the Shore and The Wild Sheep Chase. In this book Murakami becomes a journalist who engages the reader immediately in the event he is about to explore. Each interview is but a seed for a full-grown plot and the final section, which is straight narrative from the author is the most interesting of all. He has a brilliant mind which is always seeking the "meaning" of an event even when it is elusive as this one.

Murakami writes damn cool novels. He has earned entirely different respect from me as a damn fine (strikingly pragmatic) cross examiner/interviewerThe text can be broken into three distinct sections.interviews with perpsinterviews with victimsinterviews with non-combat cult members in wake of attacksat several times I was worried that Murakami's rhetoric was leading to "blame the system, not the perp" but this was clearly not the case. He only allotted as much blame as sanely due, given that the Tokyo municipality clearly provided absolutely zero logistic coordination, and people allotted to much blame to the cult rather than structures/bodies like the cult.I am damn glad the attackers were as incompetent in brewing the sarin as they were, my solid sympathies to those effected.

I love this book and the app as well. They work well together - this I reference while standing in front of a selection of a certain product, for example paper towels to help be decide between brands. The app allows you to search for the specific brand itself, which is helpful in other situations. This has changed the way I shop, hopefully for the good of the planet.

This is a terrific book. Dr. Ellis Jones, a very nice man who I had the pleasure of being taught by at UC Davis, spent years compiling research on companies, judging them with "A" through "F" letter grades based on five key issues: human rights (sweatshops, etc.), the environment (illegal dumping, etc.), animal protection (humane treatment, etc.), community involvement (local business support, etc.), and social justice (fair wages, discrimination, etc.). He has meticulously researched almost every industry imaginable, and this book is an invaluable guide. The idea, as other reviewers have discussed, is that we can essentially regulate the economy by voting with our wallets, pushing our money towards the "A"-"B" companies and away from the "C"-"F" companies. Government regulation can only go so far; consumers must be vigilant in dictating the direction of the economy. This is capitalism at its finest, and I look forward to seeing future editions of this.

I found this little handbook as a fair trade store called "Ten Thousand Villages" and picked it up immediately. This book gives a simple rating(A, B, C, D, or F) to top brands in every industry from Airlines3 to Beer to Hair Care products(shampoo, etc) to wine. What exactly is the author rating? It's a mixture of the ethics of the business graded by these factors:Human rights - do they have violation and are repeatedly being sued by employees? Sweat shops? etcEnvironmental impact - toxic waste dumping, renewable energy, etcAnimal protection - animal testing, factory farming, sustainable harvesting, etcCommunity involvement - is it a nonprofit organization? Lobbyists, political corruptness, donations, etcSocial justice - lawsuits, illegal activities, government fines, discrimination, etcThere is a list of cited resources to making the ratings. For example, the author uses information from the Better Business Bureau, The Ethical Consumer: Rankings and Boycotts, Clean Computer Campaign, Center For Public Integrity: Lobby Watch, and many more.Who we give our money to does a lot more involving our environmental impact than politicians ever will. I carry this book whenever I go shopping and pretty much memorized the grades of different restaurant chains since I eat out often. It's pocket sized to keep in a purse or pocket to carry into a grocery store. If we speak our minds with our dollar it would be a better world. Ethically questionable businesses would go bankrupt and businesses with better ethical policies would grow.I cannot say enough about how impressed I was when I bought this book from a little store on a vacation.I decided to save a little money buying this pack in mass and I am giving a copy to family a friends who I think care enough about our world to use it.

I have to admit I'm feeling a little bit evil and trecherous for not giving such a great book and excellent concept a five-star review, but I will explain.I am a long-time vegetarian and long-time environmentalist. I have been following Dr. Jones' "vote with your wallet" concept for many, many years (more than I care to admit), and I firmly believe that our voice is most greatly amplified when we speak daily from our role as consumer. The GREAT thing about this book is that it is a concise, easy-to-carry, easy-to-consult-on-the-fly score card for most everything you might want to buy, from just about every company you can buy it from, and even from most of the places you'd be buying it. If you're already a well-informed green shopper and you have some experience with the politics of responsible consumption, then this is, indeed, a five-star book. The downside to the book is that in order to make it a "pocket guide," it contains very little background information or explanation for why a particular company received the score they did. If you're new to the concept and find lots of your favorite products are getting Ds and Fs, then you are left almost on your own to find out why. (Of course, I'm all for doing your own research!) There are SOME explanations, but it's just not possible to detail the myriad reasons for corporate irresponsibility in a 177-page pocket-sized book. There IS a web site for the book, but I don't think it's been updated for the second edition of the book, and it has very limited functionality. There is no search function, for example, and if there are details about specific company scores, I couldn't find them.An example: I need some new pajamas. I have always liked shopping at Marshalls, not only because of the good prices and selection, but because I feel like my consumer dollar means less there---whatever I buy is usually past-season and is no longer part of the mainstream consumer chain. However, I checked my Better World Shopping Guide (page 134, Retail Stores) and find, much to my dismay, that Marshalls ranks a D minus! However, because they aren't the worst company on the page (that dishonor goes to Wal-Mart), there's nothing on the detail page to explain why Marshalls did so poorly.I went to the web site and looked for nearly 15 minutes, and I still couldn't find anything to explain what a retail store had to do to rank a D minus. In fact, the listing under Retail Stores is from the first edition of the book, and Marshalls isn't even on the list. The small-print explanation beneath the chart discusses only how the data is collected and processed, and not WHY the companies received the grades they did. Since there's no search function, either, I couldn't simply type in "marshalls" and hope to find the answer to my question. We NEED books like this, and we need people and organizations who can help us, the average consumer, understand how large corporations operate in relation to our world.Big companies like Philip Morris (the world's largest tobacco company, who owns Kraft, Nabisco, and a few hundred other brands) don't make it easy for consumers to link their brands with the parent company. Lots of people, even you maybe, would be surprised to know that something as seemingly innocent as buying an all-American favorite like Kraft Mac & Cheese helps Big Tobacco's bottom line.Even the grocery manager at my local Whole Foods didn't know that Back To Nature was a Kraft Foods holding when I asked him why Whole Foods Market even carries it and currently has the whole brand on store-wide sale. I've got the same question in to Whole Foods' corporate customer service, but I haven't gotten my answer yet.I LOVE this book and will continue to carry it in my purse every time I go shopping, and will continue to consult it before every shopping trip (like today). However, what's missing is adequate back-up information for new users and for those of us who want to know WHY we're doing what we're doing. I wouldn't mind if the back-up was on the web site and not in the book itself, but it's not easy to find anywhere, and I don't think that's a good idea when your goal is to educate consumers to make better decisions. I also think that most people who buy a book like this are, by nature, the kind of people who ask the same questions I'm asking, and who want to know the facts.I'm looking into The Better World Handbook to see if that is a recommended companion, so maybe the answers to my questions are there.

If you want to make a difference in your own small way...buy this book. It will give you the best banks, products, etc. that are good for the earth and good to their employees. I'm choosing these instead of the "corporate villains" listed. This is the second edition I've purchased over the years. I've given it to my kids and friends as gifts.
