Item arrived well in advance of Christmas...very happy about that and the book was in excellent shape as the shipper decribed. My wife is from Hawaii and had mentioned earlier this month she remembered looking at this book with Mom so many years ago. Hopefully, it will be a nice memeory for her to relive.

This the only missing book in the "Day In The Life" series that I have collected since 1983.

Read this book before you go, this is the real hawai'i , The day to day, Real life in hawai'i...The best book ever..

I have other "A Day in the Life of..." books, and have enjoyed the unique photos. However, to say that this one fell short of my expectations is an understatement. To make a beautiful photo book of Hawaii should be an easy task. How the photographers managed to fill this book with pictures that don't capture any of Hawaii's beauty is beyond me. If I knew nothing of Hawaii and saw this book, I would have no desire to go there. I found the images to be boring, colorless, lifeless and, dare I say it? - unattractive. If these people had been hired to make a brochure to encourage people to come to Hawaii, they would have been fired. This is by far the worst "A Day in the Life of..." book that I have seen. It is so bad that I am unwilling to keep it, and will be donating it to my local library ( people will at least be able to preview it before checking it out, and will not have paid money for it if they are disappointed).

This book was written for a woman that was born and raised in Hawaii to capture a day in Hawaii as a daydream. This book has 221 pages of amazing photography and were all taken in one 24 hour period of time. Every photo has a detailed description. Book includes photos from Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu and Kauai. This book really captures the beauty of the islands and the beauty of the Hawaiian people themselves. Well worth the money to purchase this book for all of you lovers of Hawaii.

This book is not about the photography for me, but about the whole concept and the day to day life situations it captures

Abrams' thesis is that phonetic writing and the language associated with it separate us from the natural world. The primitive had language tied to the hunt and landscape; the modern has language in books and in his cerebrum. In one of the longer acts of irony I have ever observed, Abrams uses exquisite language to return us to an appreciation of and participation in the natural, "more than human" world from which he claims language has estranged us. His examples are marvelous. Consider the Judaic scholars of the early middle ages, penning their Torahs and other documents without vowels; this syntactical arrangement forced the reader to consider where "the wind is to blow" and in so blowing infuse language with the creative wind of God. But we are far from that today. Now we must put down our books, listen to the wind, and consider the hawk on its windhover. If we do we are returned to ourselves.

This book is probably one of the best books written. and I am a huge bibliophile. I wish I was eloquent at giving review because I can't give enough praise for Abram's work. He writes beautifully, and with excellent sources and scholarship, about the natural world and our perceptions and place in it. If this book were food - I'd eat it up. If you are looking to fall in love with the natural world in a way that changes your own - get ready for the most amazing ride.

A fascinating analysis of how written phonetic language has contributed to our cultural disengagement from the natural world, the author argues that beginning with the introduction of written language humanity began to lose its deep and profound connection with the natural world, replacing our perception of the language of nature with a kind of animistic interaction with written words. Thought-provoking, even if tedious at times. Whatever you think of the rest of the book, be sure not to miss the final chapter (Coda), which is brilliant and beautiful.As an aside, I tried the meditative technique the author recommends in Part II of Chapter 6 and was thrilled with the results. Highly recommended.

I have long loved this book. I had occasion to recommend it again, and also have a moment to write a note about it... a rare synchronicity! So this: The few other reviews do a great job of describing the framework of relationship of the human to 'other-than-human' as exemplified in the evolution of increasingly complex abstractions of our communication systems, from pictograph to alphabet. So I introduced the book thusly: It is an interesting book that weaves two stories together.. One of the experienced, "Other-Than-Human" world - of all types, from animal to insect, and charting the path of the human communication from the pictorial representation of the world as experienced, to the abstractions that make up the alphabet and the dictionary of words. Most of which have little direct association w the thing they are describing. In that movement of what might be called sophistication, he posits that our human experience has become increasingly split off from the rest of the world as our filter of engagement & experiences with the Other World(s) is increasingly via the cognitive & descriptive and less of the wordless, amazed, truly "awe-some" experience. I know I feel this lack.It is split that creates so many of the large and complex problems we are dealing with today. We tend to think we understand the systems we are sometimes rather slapdashedly mucking around with... We do not. What we do not typically reckon with is how integrated life is. And that it is more than a hallmark card, or a sappy new age chant to say that everything is connected to everything...Not knowing this is central to what we call "unintended consequences", but really are more accurately "unconscious consequences". While we have also gained some learning and benefit from our reductionist science, there is no doubt of that... if we do not heed the opening introduction of this book, and its basic prescription for our consideration : That to be human... a vital, life living , life supporting person/life force we Must have some meaningful relationship with the Other-Than-Human.For other books that work out that thesis in fact if not directly I'd suggest The Elephant Whisperer, and related books. And almost anything by Carl Safina. Especially "Song of the Blue Ocean".

About the Author

William Trevor was born in Mitchelstown, County Cork, and spent his childhood in provincial Ireland. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin. I bought this book both for myself and a friend who is a librarian and book lover, both of us avid readers. Trevor's characters are of a timeless quality, fully drawn out in their human qualities and complexities. While written in and for a past generational era, the timeless human qualities are transcendent, relatable even now decades later. Each story takes its time in developing and that in itself is a quality that is both desired and satisfying. No car chases, technological plot advancements, nor jarring plot twists. The surprises are the illumination of character by their actions and their words, at times contradictory as they might be...a reasonable price for hours of satisfying reading

Trevor's work nourishes me in ways that too many short story writers are unable to deliver. He takes you into the folds of human nature and—as they open—the resulting creases shift but never disappear.

A plain-speaking genius. Atmosphere, unembroidered diction, interesting characters you can (if you're an unsophisticated reader) "relate" to.

Trevor is a really excellent short story writer . I would recommend his works to anybody who enjoys short stories

Good stories but some of the endings are disappointing

William Trevor digs deep into the human psyche, and explores the fears and fantasies that lurk therein. Haunting, mysterious, and captivating, this book of stories will keep your attention for hours.

He's one of the best short story writers in the English language. Really, one of the very best.

Almost Straight is the first book I've read from this author and it makes me want to read more of her work. The story felt authentic and was approached in a very thoughtful and nuanced way. The characters were given room to be round and dynamic, even the "bad guys" of the story, and no one was presented as a caricature. I thought the author had a captivating voice that captured the main character's emotional struggles and felt real. Overall good read.

What can I say, this is my favorite genre and this was an amazing book. I don't care for all the religious stuff one bit and it's difficult to relate to for someone from secular Europe, which usually brings it down for me.. but the way the chemistry between the main characters was presented was top notch.This book hit all the right buttons for me, and I felt like I was right there with her as she fell in love for the first time.

When I started this book, I thought it was going to be a stereotypical look at homosexuality as seen from the evangelical Christian viewpoint (which I abhor). I was wrong. It turned out to be much more. Yes, those stereotypes were presented, but so was the other side. Some people didn't care who loved who, and some Christians in the story believed more in God's love than in the hate spewed from an old book. Some people were able to change and be accepting because they loved the characters of the girls in the book, and some people still hated. That's pretty much the world right now.Audrey is a typical sixteen-year-old when the book starts. She has a boyfriend and dreams of going to the prom. Then Liv comes into her life and she doesn't understand the feelings she has for her. I think that is normal for any teenage relationship. It's all new territory. Audrey is confused, convinced she's going to hell, and worried about what her parents will do, but she can't deny that she loves Liv. It feels real. The author must remember what it's like to be a teenage girl. "Love is love", she says in the book, and it is. The relationship between Audrey and Liv is depicted as any teenage relationship with its ups and downs, idealism, and crashes. Theirs is not a gay love. It's just love.I thought it was a beautiful story. The author made it clear that being gay was not a choice, but also that Audrey could just have been swept off her feet and could end up loving boys again. Teenage relationships are rarely long-lasting and Audrey has a whole lifetime of experiences ahead of her. I think parents with gay kids would find this book useful, especially devout Christians. This book will show them the pain their prejudice causes their kids and they can see the way the parents in the book dealt with it. Gay teens would probably read this book to feel normal, to have their feelings validated, and confused teens would see they are not alone."Love is love". That's all that matters.

Took me about a day to finish it but I really enjoyed it, it was like traveling in time to my time in high school and wonder what it could have been like to come out then and instead faking it like I did

Change is scary, being different in high school is a death sentence... but being true & open - thats what this book teaches us .

First book I've read by this author. High-interest reading and wasn't disappointed. Will be reading more books by this author

This is a slow One-dimensional book only because it shows the action and result. I would buy it again for sure. If you are a Christian and want to know why so many tragic events have happened you need to read this book. It's not a character book. This is a spiritual book. You can match this up with the word of God.

I love this book. It tells the whole stor. Every book I have ever read by D'Souza has been really very well written about complicated things. This man is a wonder with the English language and simplifies it and tells it the way it is. I also like hardback books that I intend to refer to often. Read this book. You will not be sorry!

Intriguing and thought provoking book. Mr. Koenig presents case after case of U.S. Foreign policy with respect to Israel, pro or anti, and it's meteorological outcome such as hurricanes. I now try and observe the environmental outcomes when U.S. Policy concentrates on Israel.My only wish is that it was in Kindle format.Those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed seems to hold. Don't believe me? Observe for yourself.

My goodness! It is frightening to trace the evidence from the actions the U.S. has taken or even suggested we take or Israel takes to what has happened to the U.S. within hours or days. This is truly frightening, eye-opening, and I would think a fair warning to the U.S. administrations. Our country needs to be very cautious as pertains to Israel, what we do or consider doing. This is not a book of fiction but is full of facts and dates of events that cover several presidencies - both Bush's and Clinton. There are other authors who cover some of this same material. America is in trouble for certain, but what that will look like remains to be seen. God's people are the ones who need to be in prayer and turn from their wicked ways first...

This book is a real eye-opener, I bought this book for my sister who has blasted the evils of Israel for a few years. Decided it was time for her to read some truth. That every time a US Government leader does or says something stupid against Israel, we reap it here in the USA. Whether huge storms, terrible hurricanes, destructive, rare multi tornadoes coming against a certain section ofthe USA. You cannot open your mouth and rain curses on Israel without consequences. Its like poking GOD in the eye!

Now I know and it makes prefect sense don't mess with the borders of Israel or there will be consequences the land belongs to the Jews wo to him who tries to divide it!

Since I read this book, every time something happens in our country I look at the news and what is going on regarding Israel. Amazing! Thank you for this book, Mr. Koenig!

If you have read the "Powertools" or "Hot Rods" series, you have already met Quinn and are aware of his childhood. In this story he finally gets a chance to "come into his own". The chemistry between Quinn, Trevon and Devra would rev anyone's engine! I loved this beginning to the next chapter in the "Powertools: Hot Rides" series. It is one of those stories that I had to have a physical copy to hold. I’m thrilled that we finally get to read Quinn’s story in Wild Ride and it was well worth the wait! Jayne Rylon once again delivers another steamy story that I devoured all in one sitting. Quinn is all grown up now and seems to be struggling with some demons of the past. He comes upon Trevon and Devra whom he is attracted to and ends up embarking on some pretty steamy sex with. I enjoyed watching these three together and what a wild ride it was! I loved seeing the Hot Rods gang again and I cannot wait to read more in this new series. It is so good to be back in the Power Tool and Hot Rods world again.

Love that there is another series of Jayne Rylon AWESOMENESS to look forward to!! Hot Rides is starting out to be just as good as the Powertools and Hot Rods series if not better! Wild Ride is spicy HOT as you expect as well as a great storyline that keeps you hooked to the last word. You can’t help but love Quinn and root for him to find his happily ever after with Trevon and Devra.

I love Quinn story. It has been a long time coming and I am not disappointed. I love Jayne Rylon's story telling. Hey, That's My Monster makes a great read-a-loud. With plenty of opportunities to use different voices, and different tones and loudness and softness, this book leads readers on a Monsters, Inc. type story. Ethan is devastated when he learns his monster has left him to help his younger sister. In a desperate attempt to get his monster back, Ethan tries to find another monster for his sister. But none of the monsters that come to visit are quite right, Emma wants to play with them rather than let them scare her into bed. It's difficult for a book to be a combination of creepy and funny, but somehow this book and its prequel (I Need My Monster) manage to do it. The illustrations are gorgeous and delightful with each monster truly unique (I really wouldn't want eight drippy noses myself, but Emma enjoys wiping them). Every class I read this book too, loved it. I even had one class beg to have me read it the next week, and they applauded after I did. That's the first time I've ever had a class do that. This one is truly a winner for that young reader/listener who enjoys a touch of creepiness with the funny.

My granddaughter loves this book so much we purchased another for her friend. Absolutely adorable story! She loved it so much we were reading it non stop. By the second week I was so impressed at how fluently she was reading the story with some of the longer words thinking it was all that repetition... only to find out she actually had the whole book memorized! HA! She is 7 and can "read" the whole book without looking at the pages from front to back. That's how many times she has read it because she just loves it so much. And this coming from one who is afraid of everything.. This book made her not afraid of "monsters" and helped her to see the silly side of make believe "fear".

In this story, we have a little boy who's ready to go to bed but he realizes his monster isn't under his bed and he can't sleep without him. Luckily, the monster has left the boy a note telling him he had to leave because another kid needs me more. The little boy soon realizes it's his sister.The little boy then tries to get his sister to sleep so his monster will come back to him, with no success. In fact, other monsters begin to show up, all trying and failing to get this little girl to sleep. But just like the little boy has a specific monster for him, the little sister has a monster that's just perfect for her.A very cute story and I loved the illustrations.

I have found that sequels are no as good as the original, this book is an exception to that. Ethan's little sister is having problems going to sleep and staying in her bed so his monster decides that she needs him more. Ethan spends the evening trying to find another monster to keep his sister in her bed at night with no luck until the end! The descriptions of the monsters are so vivid and cute plus the illustrations are amazing. I love how this book and the original make the monster under the bed a more fun experience instead of a scary one. I have to read these two books on repeat just about daily!

My 3 year old daughter absolutely LOVES this book, and I even enjoy reading it! It's about a brother who wants his monster back who's been taken by his little sister. It's cute, it's funny and being the parent you get to make a whole lot of funny sounds, voices and roars. My daughter giggles like crazy when I do the monster with a stuffed up nose. There are plenty of gorgeous pictures for you child to look at as well as plenty of reading in this one. I've been asked to read it multiple times and it's so interesting I'm still not bored of it! Highly recommend to little monster lovers =)

Not quite the first book, but still pretty darn cute. We absolutely adore the first, and it is a favorite with my three year old daughter. It has been since she was a year old. She saw this and HAD to have it! She does enjoy it, but it just doesn't have that same awesomeness, somehow... we read the other EVERY night sometimes two or three times. This she only wants to read once in a blue moon.

My son listened and watched the video of this book on YouTube and just had to have it. He loves reading it and I love how vibrant the colors are. Really good illustration.

It is as great and as cute as the first one. When I saw the first one at the book store I knew I had to have it. I stumbled on this book having no idea a new one was out. I could not be more thrilled with this one. I recommend this book for all ages. I love reading this to my kids and both the 8 and 4 year old love it!

my dad and I live 4,000 miles apart. When I was growing up, we listened to a LOT of NPR in our house. (I'm happy to say my kid now has his favorite programs). I saw this when I was looking for another book by Cokie Roberts and thought it would be a neat Father's Day gift for my dad. He loves it! Everything about it. The pictures, the short stories about each show, the way it's arranged by decade, and even the typeface. There were some episodes from the '80s and '90s discussed in the book that we both remember listening to together. Dad even read me some excerpts over the phone from episodes in the '70s, and they were absolutely fascinating. This is really a perfect blend of nostalgia and deeper insights into your favorite shows and the people behind them. I have since purchased another copy for myself. Also? I'm pretty sure I'm the favorite now. ;)

If I could, I'd split my rating: 4 stars for regular listeners and fans of NPR; 3 stars for those who don't listen to NPR or aren't otherwise familiar with them.The book chronicles the highlights of the first 40 years of NPR's existence up through 2009 or so. It centers on the greatest historical events of those years and NPR's role in bringing those stories to its listeners.At times the essays run to a modest tooting of NPR's own horn--how they were there first, told the story best, succeeded against all odds and survived personal dangers and horrors.Other essays have a "little engine that could" theme--especially the early years when no one knew what NPR was about, they ran on a shoestring budget, and somehow got the story first, or told it best, and did it with subpar equipment and facilities and an undermanned news department.That said, for NPR fans, this is a nice encapsulation of their growth and increasing role in the national and international news business. There are some nice reminiscences of NPR pioneers and "legends" like Susan Stamberg, Bob Edwards, Cokie Roberts, and Nina Totenberg. We hear the story behind the story in many cases of reporters risking their lives in places like Iraq and Afghanistan during the wars there.Note: I read the kindle version and some of the photos require you to enlarge the font in order to see them clearly.

As a long-time NPR fan with a distant background in the news business, I looked forward to the arrival of THIS IS NPR on my Kindle. While I did learn some facts I didn't know before, the style of the book was too disconnected and disjointed. More than a few times, I had to back up to see who had written the chapter I was reading. The pictures weren't much help either in giving me the flavor of the NPR newsroom.All in all, it left me dissatisfied. I felt that I had been reading a bunch of promotional pieces written for use in the interminable weeks when they yammer on for donations. There was no central philosophy and flow to the book except that it was broken up into a timeline of decades.If NPR news magazine programs were like this book, the listener totals would be a fraction of what it is. How such talented journalists could produce this high school yearbook is beyond me.

As with anything NPR, this book provided an "armchair moment", an opportunity to find out about just what it took, and still takes, for NPR to deliver quality reporting on a wide variety of topics. From the effect of developing technology (from analog editing with razor blades, to precision digital user friendly interface), to the contributions of NPR staff whose passion for informing their listeners is matched only by their investigative skills, this work presents an interesting perspective of 40 years of history and service by NPR. Thanks, guys, for everything you've done and continue to do.

It's ok, but I thought it would be more interesting than it is. There is a certain sameness to the various essays, even though the writers are often revisiting significant events in history. As a longtime NPR listener, I was expecting more personality, more of a conversational tone. A good book to drop in on when you just have a few minutes to read one or two chapters.

What a fun read! Learning the early history, putting SPELLINGS with names and faces, and reading how some of my favorite stories and programs came to be. Highly readable, highly addictive. I'm ready to live the history of NPR for the next 40 years.

I have my radio fixed on NPR - I listen everyday and love it. This is a terrific history - though at times a bit superficial - also love that they put photos of the people I hear everyday. I have an image when I hear them of what they look like and none of my images matches with the real thing. The CD is also a cool extra.

I am a devoted NPR listener and this is a wonderful set of reminiscences by familiar NPR personne.
