This is a VERY high level overview of Scandanavia. So high level that in most of the places we visited, there was't enough information to make good decisions. Limited information about how to use public transit, very limited information about dining options. We were mostly in capital cities, I would have expected the book to go into a little more detail. We also bought the Rick Steve's guide to Scandanvia for the trip, and that book was much more helpful and went into a lot more detail.
In the past, I have found Lonely Planet travel guides to be very useful. The one for Scandinavia was not very good. Very light in content and more pretentious than normal.
I think it's good for a general idea on the region but it turned out to be too summarized for my expectations. I have other Lonely Planet guides that offer more extensive information on history and general background. I think this one lacks of that type of information more than the zoomed in information on what to do in a certain town.
We are traveling to Iceland and Norway, and I thought this book would be more compact than buying separate guides for each country. It turned out to be a waste of time and money - too little detail on any one place to be of much use.
This guide is very helpful. If you're spending more time in Iceland, I recommend also buying the Lonely Planet guide to Iceland by itself. Still, the Scandinavia guide will give you everything you need to play a multi-week trip to this area of the world.
Pretty good, nice volume though obviously is more info in individual books on each country seperatly. Would still recommend this though. If your just going to one country, the Rough Guides might be a nice option too.
Some of the most amazing hotels and hostels I've stayed at aren't mentioned in lonely planet. Also, I attended a few annual events , found out about them from fellow travellers, also not mentioned at all.
I have used DK travel books for years & thought I would try Lonely Planrt. I'll be switching back to DK and will never stray again. LP is difficult to use & does not contain the historical background that I enjoy
