This book is blatant heresy. It seeks to create a version of God that's subject to personal whims. I appreciate the author's attempts to empower disabled people who feel neglected by society, and it's very clear that the Bible isn't meant to portray God as some bearded white male despite white cultures generally portraying God as such: God simply isn't a human (although Jesus was).The answer to feeling alienated from human conventions is not to go to a "build-a-god" workshop. Your own personal conventions are simply more human conventions. It seems the author is arguing that if cis white men can portray God how they want, than everyone should be able to. The correct solution to alienation from human conceptions of God is to seek to know God in God's own terms, as portrayed in scripture, not to seek yet another human convention (or your own convention) to smother reality.I read this as part of an advanced theology class and I was very troubled by it.
Theology examines all manner of issues dealing with faith. Disability, whether you are born with one or it comes later in life, is seldom dealt with by theology. The word "toward" in the title is very important, for a great deal of work needs to be done in this field. The author goes a long way toward making the subject accessible to non-specialists, which is very good considering how the majority of people that should read this book are not specialists in theology. I suspect only theologians will read it, but I do suggest this book for any person of faith who is disabled, or loves someone who is disabled.

I haven't had the time to read lately. What I have read of it. I have enjoyed it.
As a theology student and as a person with a chronic illness that occasionally disables me from day-to-day activities I found this book to be just what I had been searching for from my theology books for years. The myth of disability as an affliction for sin is dispelled! The myth that someone with a disability is dispelled! The book reminds all that in Christian theology we are all made in imago dei even those of us with physical and medical disabilities. Thank you to the author for claiming me to be made in the image of God! I highly recommend this book for all theology students as well as those who are hurting in their relationship with God due to illness.
why is such a thin book so expensive
I purchased the book in partial fulfillment for a Deaconate program. As I began reading I soon realized that the long convoluted sentences and ideas began to bog down and the concepts were difficult to grasp. I forced myself to continue to read, but it is slow going. The history was interesting regarding the discrimination against the "disabled" that the churches have imposed. I am hearing impaired and have not experienced the discrimination in my church partly because it is an invisible difference. However, I can understand if one has a more visible difference, how it would be an issue. Overall, the book is informative and worth reading to get an understanding of what differently abled people face especially in the church. Because of the difficult reading, I would rate it as a 3.
