I became familiar with Mr. Coates when I read the 'reparations' article in "The Atlantic" while visiting my sister's house. This book is a more comprehensive look at the horror and degradation inflicted by white America on those of African (or native American, or . . . ) descent, ie, anybody else of less than totally white background and appearance. As a 70 year old white guy, I'm amazed and ashamed that this oppression continues almost unabated until this day, without ever having become a thing that our alleged 'better natures' would not have overcome. But no, as you read this indictment of the non-unitedness of the United States, it becomes clear that, from the founding fathers on, we have been a nation of, by, and for white people, without any real regard for the way that people of color (you know, any of those non-white ones) are treated. It's enormously sad and shameful that a nation of such high stated principles would allow itself to become the racist place that is in evidence pretty much everywhere you look. I think that everyone should read this book and keep close in memory the realities that it documents. We REALLY should be doing better for our brother and sister citizens. Truth is though, that we're not, and that's a huge part of what this book is about. It's a staggeringly painful and revealing piece of writing. In some movie, some character asks of some jury "Now, imagine if she was white". You may have seen the movie, and understood the starkness of the contrast between what was being asked and the reality of what was. That's where we are as a nation, and where we all are as citizens. Try to imagine how tolerable those centuries of indignities would be if inflicted on ANY member of your family. If you're white, you really DO have to imagine, if you're not, no imagination is required - it's what you live.I wish Mr. Coates well in continuing to try to educate the population at large, and hope that his message gets absorbed by people who might otherwise not know what has been and still is, going on. It's much too easy to be white and not really know about the depth and duration of this problem; WAY easier than it should be. Think of this book as the textbook for "Black Studies for White Folks" 1A. Spend some time with this book and get yourself up to speed.

This book is truly exceptional in so many ways. It is a dense read, so prepare for that. All of the essays were published in The Atlantic and I had read some of them. What makes this book particularly remarkable besides Coates' exceptional writing, is what I call the pre-chapters to the essays. Here, Coates' shares what he was reading, thinking, working on in terms of his writing, and how he thinks the essay held up over time. These reflections are especially poignant and help the reader get a glimpse into the inner workings of Coates' thinking and piecing it together. The book really comes together in the last 2-3 chapters and is absolutely resplendent. I recommend this book for anyone exploring the current state of affairs in the U.S. regarding race and racism, white supremacy, and all the ways in which these systems suppress people of color in sometimes the most violent of ways. However, I also recommend this book to people trying to figure out how to reflect on their own work because I think these pre-chapters are an excellent example of the deep dive into meta-cognitive processes and recognizes that we are all a work in progress. Happy reading!

"We were eight years in power" is a quote from South Carolina state congressman Thomas Miller, an African-American who was elected at the end of Reconstruction. He was highlighting the achievements made during Reconstruction, arguing against the disenfranchisement of black voters. They had built schools, established charities, educated the deaf and dumb, and built infrastructure. But his very argument was a threat to white supremacy. Coates quotes W.E.B. DuBois in his book: "If there was one thing that South Carolina feared more than bad Negro government, it was good Negro government."This incomplete & halted era of reconstruction is the framework against which Ta-Nehisi Coates sets his book. He pulls eight essays written around the eight years of the Obama presidency, and shows how "the symbolic power of Barack Obama's presidency - that whiteness was no longer strong enough to prevent peons from taking up residence in the castle - assaulted the most deeply rooted notions of white supremacy and instilled fear in its adherents and beneficiaries."The essays chosen for the book tackle a myriad of topics: the erasure of black history, mass incarceration, what it means to be black in the public eye, and, in my opinion the most compelling essay of them all, the case for reparations. Coates provides notes before each essay, explaining the context in which they were written, why they were relevant then, and why they are relevant now. The book shows an evolution, both in Coates' writing and thought, but also in the national conversation surrounding race, swirling towards the final chapter & epilogue, in which Donald Trump, the main force behind birtherism and much of the racist drum-beating, has been elected president. This book is brilliantly written, incisive, and extremely relevant. Read it with your families, use it in your classrooms, and give copies to your friends.

This is a book every white person needs to read. It will hurt. But that is as it should be. We live in an apartheid state. This man can think. And write. His prose is often pleasingly lyrical, even when weighing heavy matters. I find myself wanting to read it aloud. If I were younger, I might say his prose, when it flows, sounds like hip hop, but since I am older than the author, I’d have to say it sounds like jazz to me. Not John Coltrane. More like Miles Davis.

One of the best books I've ever read! Mr. Coates has a rhythmic, poetic way with words that make reading this very harsh information almost pleasurable. This is the kind of book that I will gift to young people that need to know the truth of this country's history...that would be ALL young people!

The title indicated that it contained the play "THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE" not Brecht's comments on the play; since I purchased it to preview the play before I saw it, I was disappointed.

Nice cheap method to pick up the reading for the theater history class. It's used but it's was still in a shape that will last you. And it came on time depending on your delivery method.

One of the master communist playwright Bertolt Brecht's strengths as an artist was the ability to set up a moral dilemma and work it out to a conclusion, not always a satisfactory one, by play's end. This is unusual in a seemingly orthodox follower of the old Stalinist' socialist realist' cultural program. This work nevertheless permitted Brecht to address an age-old question about the nature of property ownership, extending it from its natural and historic setting in land and chattels to the question of personal human ownership. The question posed here is whether a child abandoned by its natural mother then found and raised by another women should go to the former or that latter. Nice dilemma, right? But Brecht, as seem in Mother Courage and other parables, is not above cutting right to the bone on moral questions. What makes this work a cut above some of Brecht's more didactic plays is the way that he weaves the parable about the odd resolution of an ancient Chinese property dispute and places that `wisdom' in context of a then current dispute between two Soviet-era communes. In the ancient dispute the judge who is called upon to render judgment, using the circle as a medium to resolve the dispute, seems to be Solomonic but is really a buffoon. This is pure Brechtian irony. This says as much about Brecht attitude toward property as it does about the old time Chinese justice system. The question of property rights as presented by Brecht and their value as a societal glue is also something the reader or viewer of this play should think about as well.

Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," written in self-imposed exile towards the end of World War II, is a story within a play, in which a bard, or singer, interrupts a group of Caucasian farmers arguing over ownership of land that has been ravaged by Nazi tanks and entertains them with a relevant tale of yore. In a city called Grusinia, the Governor is executed in a coup and his wife flees for her life, abandoning their baby son Michael, who is picked up by a humble kitchen maid named Grusha. Having recently betrothed herself to a soldier named Simon who is away on duty, she sets out on a cross-country journey with the infant to get help from her brother, a farmer in a distant village.Lavrenti, her brother, suggests she get married immediately to avoid suspicion that the baby is hers out of wedlock, and the most available candidate is a local wretched peasant. After living with this man for a couple of years, Grusha is apprehended by soldiers who have come to take young Michael, the sole heir of the deposed Governor's estate, back to Grusinia. The case of Michael's custody, contested by the Governor's wife against Grusha, is brought to trial, where the judge, a drunk named Azdak whose unofficial appointment to this position is a farce, decrees that the boy will be placed inside a circle drawn with chalk on the courtroom floor, and that the woman who is able to pull him out of the circle is the real mother. (Study the judge's exact words when you read this.)Although the story is of medieval Chinese origin, Brecht's play is a sort of refashioning of the Biblical anecdote about Solomon and expands the idea by supplying a whole backstory to the women's argument. Solomon's judgment is accepted because his wisdom is universally considered to be impeccable, but what of a man like Azdak who functions on whim more than on wisdom? The ending is subtly brilliant in the sense that the outcome of the contest is subject to semantic debate (whether you think the judgment is fair or logical or contradictory depends on how closely you read the judge's words), but also in the question of irony or sincerity in the suggestion that true justice will be conferred by nature rather than by man.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a very entertaining and enjoyable play to read or perform, whilst also containing attitudes and ideologies to analyze. It's a great read for its own sake, but can also easily be used to teach literature in a classroom. A great play!

Great price and a good read!

My son's theatre department is putting on this play. My son tried out for a part. He made the first cut, got all excited and wanted the play. However, he did not make the second cut. I believe he is returning the book. Thanks so muchSandy Rodie

I have been waiting for this book since reading Part 1 in 7 degrees of Alphas. Ms Allen did make slight revisions for some parts in the beginning from the original but they were good revisions that helped the storyline and gave a little more insight in the type of relationship Val had with Damon. Ms Allen also taped intro the behavior of an abuser and their warped their sense of reality. PETER & VAL were good together and lived their chemistry. I wonder will occur between DOUG & BECCA🤔.

Well I finally got to finish this book. And it was just as good as what I expected. You write more than sex you tell a story with every line of the book keeps you wanting more. 5 books from you and they all have been excellent.

I tried, but I couldn’t do it. It’s very repetitive...and then when Jones meets Val and is so incredibly pushy...so cages, then before they even have any real conversation she’s telling herself no sex on the first date even though it isn’t a date...not to mention she’s in a relationship....then she tells a police officer her car gets stolen and expects him not to ask questions...I just couldn’t...

This a first time read of this author for me and man what a ride. Gotta say excellent writing. Suspense, action, mystery, betrayal & love all live their best lives in this well paced book. The bad guys were really bad guys & the good guys were two steps behind. Would’ve liked to see more smarts w/the police work. Pete obviously wasn’t an idiot & knew what was going on but kept chasing his tail. The love story was addictive because Pete was in love & claiming his woman. I liked that the author painted a complete & immersive picture. Yes Val annoyed me w/a few of her decisions of not using common sense considering her situation but I’ve seen worse so I can let her slide. Overall good writing & execution.

Was a hard read, several things just kept repeating themselves. It just seemed that the main characters were to open to repeating the same mistakes over and over. Also for Val to be so stand up and always in defiance with Pete, you did not see that side with D; she just kept getting bet down.

This book could've been good,if only the author took the time to develop the characters and their world better. They were all one dimensional and made it hard to sympathize with them, I couldn't loose myself in a story so badly written. Would not be reading anything more from this author.

The tale was weaved with dangerous intentions and a love story that prevailed throughout it all. Nothing could stop Pete's need to keep Val safe, protected and loved.

Much anticipated. I remember reading this in 7 Degrees of Alpha and just when the story was getting good, it ends. I searched high and low, looking for the full-length novel. Now that it's here, baaby!!! Peter and Val had to go through some things before their happily ever after and it wasn't because of their distrust of each other or because of family, it was because of a bitter ex. Damon (bitter ex of Val) felt like if he couldn't have Val, no one should. Not only was he trying to ruin their relationship but he was involved in alot of criminal activity that Detective Jones (Peter) was at a roadblock trying to solve due to his superiors. Well worth the wait.
