A Twist of the Wrist (1)Twist of the Wrist 1 and 2 were recommended to me, along with Proficient Motorcycling, as guides to help beginners understand the mechanisms of riding motorcycles. I found Twist of the Wrist 1 was more involved with racing on a road course than dealing with daily riding/traffic. However, physics are physics and many of the tips and strategies do apply in normal riding!I have a collection of books on improving racing strategies in cars, and I found many of the tips and strategies can apply in normal driving. It's just that most people choose to ignore this and believe in one philosophy or the other. Keith Code's philosophy to riding, at least in the scope of this book, is found in racing. He does include some tips on basic concepts such as using the front brakes, rev-matching your downshifts, and counter-steering. Overall, Twist of the Wrist 1 isn't as comprehensive or as solid for a beginner as Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough. That said, Twist of the Wrist is worth buying to read and to use as a reference in the future.Code enjoys using the $10 attention span tool, which makes sense as much as it is annoying to see pop up every other paragraph. I feel that it would be better if Twist of the Wrist 1 and 2 were combined, revised, and updated because Twist of the Wrist 2 filled in a lot of the gaps left in the first, and includes more useful tips and the most common survival reactions (SR's).Overall: 4/5 stars, not as mandatory as Proficient Motorcycling, but still a good read. Twist of the Wrist 2 is what I'd recommend if you had to choose between TOTW 1 and 2.

I think Keith Code does a great job explaining within 'A Twist of the Wrist' and 'A Twist of the Wrist II' related to cycle suspension and the smooth cycle turning performance -- for example, ability for the rider to control weight loading of front and rear wheel contact patch while cornering makes a difference for road traction, ability to steer the cycle in a new direction, and how to transition from throttle to brakes and back to cracking the throttle to get it done smoothly.What I learned, never thought about before; it follows, when you brake [dive] the front suspension under rider control for turning; as a result, it makes the cycle easier to turn because you have changed the 'rake' and 'trail' of the front wheel. It all makes sense and now requires I must practice turning more during street riding to take advantage of this new knowledge.Good book for the street cycle rider.

I was really happy to find this book available for Kindle. I read it years ago and it made a huge difference in my riding. Then I took Keith's class, then read A Twist of the Wrist II, and with all that I went from a shaky street rider to a confident and proficient trackday rider and racer. I know this book saved me from making tons of mistakes and and/or crashing my bike.Seeing A Twist of the Wrist available for Kindle prompted me to buy it and read it again, and I'm so glad I did. Reading it again now, with so much more riding experience, I found a ton of things that I had glossed over the first time that now mean SO MUCH more to me!Plus, the Kindle edition of the book has been updated and I found it easier to read and more current than the original book. Can't wait for better weather so I can go ride and work on my skills again. This is a must-read for anyone from casual street riders to those who race or aspire to do so.

I've got both of his books and have seen the movies. This guy really knows what he's talking about, but the writing, to me, is almost another language. Over the years I've tried reading his books several times but really have trouble. I wish he'd get a writer to redo them because I can tell enough to know that he really knows his stuff.

This book is probably one of the standards in professional motorcycle racing. It is intended for the track racing rider who wants to better understand the track and how to master it. It is not intended for the rider who wants to improve his road skills as most references are solely related to understanding the track and how to use continuous improvement strategies to increase your speed and lower track times. It is a very effective disciplined process that explains a variety of track geography, cambers and surfaces and how those will affect the mechanics and approach to every corner and elevation. If you are trying to improve your track racing skills or are considering going to a track day for motorcycling for the first time, there's a lot of good advice and illustrations for you to absorb here.

It also tells you the intent of the regulations and possible compliance issues for each one. It is very thorough and I highly recommend it. There is a national study guide that you can purchase off the appropriate website, but I got to say it is very underwhelming in preparing you for the NAB.

Great for health care and federal state inspections. I used it when I took my National Nursing Home Licensure exam. Great reference book to keep in your office to review the regulations.

I thought maybe "The Department of Sensitive Crimes" would be mostly a light, funny read, and I was pleasantly surprised as I read to discover that while yes, the team that makes up the department (Ulf, Anna, Erik and Carl … with quirky policeman Blomquist assisting on most cases) and the cases they are assigned DO have many comic, amusing, laughable moments, there are equal measures of serious ideas and interesting, thought-provoking things that are just parts of life (though sometimes one might not really think about them; they just try to live through them the best he or she can). I alternated between laughing and pausing after a thought or comment to think about it, and saying to myself, "Hmmm, yeah, I know what you mean, but I hadn't really thought about it much … " It was really a lot of fun, to try and figure out the cases along with the team (do you punish someone for causing chaos with his or her imagination? How can one whose job it is to seek justice for a victim possible feel sympathy for a suspect?), and to follow their personal lives and challenges (what is wrong with Ulf's dog? Who will best whom for the best joke on April Fool's Day? Will Anna and Ulf talk, or pretend like nothing unusual is going on? How is the best way to deal with Blomquist and his sometimes lengthy talks about potato skins, the proper amount of sunscreen and other thoughts?) I couldn't believe how talented the author was in injecting humor into topics or situations where it would appear to be … well, quite sad.I really, really liked this book because it was so easy to get interested and involved and it made me smile while making me think about oddball things I probably would never have much reason to think about otherwise - fun! I can't wait for the next book in the series!

This book was easy to read... but hard to review. By easy to read, I mean it was a real page turner, full of quirky characters and interesting twists and mysteries. It wasn't always easy to fully understand what was going on, however. I mean that in a mostly good way.Quirky is the word here. The Department of Sensitive Crimes is set in a fascinating Swedish police department that is tasked with solving the most unusual, complicated and maybe not so serious crimes. Not at all X Files, don't get confused.Many mysteries have a murder or series of murders- and the detective(s) solve the murder. No murder here. Missing people? A possible murder? Strange occurrences? Here, instead of "mysteries" we more have "mystifying happenings".Our Protagonist is Ulf Varg (or Wolf Wolf) who has a knack for solving such mystifying happenings. Fascinating gentleman.A little action, but no real violence, some romance and a very fun read.

McCall Smith writes very chatty, very charming books where the lead characters as often in a slight spot of trouble, but things eventually clear up...until the next book in the series. The “44 Scotland Street” is a great example of how readers love to revisit their old friends and catch on their past year’s going’s on.Macall Smith’s newest book, “The Department of Sensitive Crimes”, is the first in his new “The Inspector Varc” series. Set in the Swedish city of Malmo, the series features Ulm Varc, who heads up a somewhat random police office dedicated to solving the type of crimes which are, in England handed over to equally fictional department of Peculiar Crimes.I couldn’t come up with sufficient interest in characters and plot to finish the book. I feel bad about this as I usually like McCall Smith’s work. I can only advise anyone who interested in this book to read as many of the Amazon and Goodreads reviews you can. Then you can figure out if you want to read the book.

McCall Smith turns his gentle hand to Malmo, Sweden where a police department investigates "sensitive" crimes. These are crimes that really don't fit in anywhere else. The department is headed up by Ulf "TheWolf" Varg and has three other members. Cases include an unique look at the stabbing of a knee, an imaginary boyfriend and an investigation of the chief of police's relative's resort. It needs to handled with kid gloves and tact and involves a wolf. The series reminds me of the Dalhousie and The Ladies Detective Agency series as there is a lot of ruminations and discussions of the philosophies of life. It's an interesting start to another series by a certainly prolific writer.

The author's book, MY ITALIAN BULLDOZER, was what convinced me to read THE DEPARTMENT OF SENSITIVE CRIMES. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy his latest book. The first was also written in that slow, methodical manner and it slowly revealed both characters and plot. This book, situated in Malmo, Sweden, just can't hold my interest. I had a difficult time relating to any of the protagonists, their problems, or the crimes.The best I can say is that if you're an Alexander McCall Smith fan, this will probably be a story that you will enjoy.
