Mystery and suspense at it's best!What I liked:Harlan Coben is a big name in mainstream mystery and thriller writing. His titles have seen a lot of attention and justifiably so. He writes with a kind of inner radar that hones in on the issues that readers already have on their minds. Current headlines and little things that just make you wonder are the themes of his books. His books feel real and they don't sugar coat the facts or the fiction about the subject.Let's face it, the dating game has changed. Meeting someone online is no longer an unusual thing. It's common. And with it comes a lot of problems that dater's never had to think about before. "Is that picture really what he/she looks like?" "Does this person really have that job and live in that town?" "Is he or she married?" and unfortunately, "Could this guy/gal be after something more sinister than true love?" The online dating theme was spot on in this novel. Coben treats it like what it is... and everyday occurrence that could be fraught with a whole lot of danger. I thought his portrayal of the landscape of online dating was masterful. He pulls the reader into this world of conspiracy and murder and he doesn't let go. Amazing!Kat Donovan is a woman after my own heart. She's been knocked around a little bit when it comes to love and she isn't sure she wants to get it right. She's tough, a little intimidating and set in her ways. Is is worth it, to lose her independence to some guy? But she still wishes she had someone to come home to. Those are the people that scammers prey on. The ones who have almost lost hope, but that little glimmer they can latch on to exists. I loved the way Coben wrote this no-nonsense character who was tough on the outside, but had a gentle heart within.The twists and turns in this book were one right after the other. There were several parallel stories running at one time and reader is sifting back and fought between them wondering how they tie in throughout the book. But everything from an 18 year old murder case involving Kat's father, to a wayward ex-fiancee, to a teenagers worry about his mother's activities, ties in, in a big way. Coben has a way with working it all out and letting the puzzle pieces fall into place when the he nears the conclusion. I never feel disappointed and most of the time even if I have figured out what's going on, it's all about the journey. This was a great one, by a real master in the genre.What I didn't like:Big conspiracies and murder plots can be so convoluted and drawn out so far that they become impossible scenarios. I think this one may have gotten a little close to the line, but it didn't quite go over. It was plausible, if just so. But that didn't change the fact that it was an exciting and engrossing novel.Bottom Line:If you've never read a Harlan Coben I suggest you fix that as soon as possible. If you like the kind of book that makes your heart beat speed up and your palms sweat, this is it. Great ready, because it's a real thrill ride.

Was this really a Harlan Coben book? I hated it. It was totally predictable. It earned a star because there was a twist in the end I didn't see comming, but I didn't like the ending too. It was sloppy. For instance, what happened to Titus? And Aqua? It was like "I'm tired of writing, let the readers imagine what happened."The characters were not believable, specially that Reynaldo dude. " UH, look at me, I'm scary and evil, I only love my dog".Also, what about that BS about Win? What if this was my first Harlan Coben book, I'd be like: "Huh? Who is this? What is he doing here? And why he isn't mentioned again? Was he important?"What if I hadn't read the Bolitar series? I like to read my books over and over, but I am not going to read this one again.

Sadly, I cannot recommend this Harlan Coben novel. I've read just about all of his previous books, and they have been excellent, but I am at a loss as to why this one has his name on it. Truly, it is so dreary and silly, so boring, so very dull that I am having a very hard time believing he wrote it. It's not even close to the quality of his previous writing. Perhaps he didn't; many bestselling authors (James Patterson comes to mind) are getting teams of people to write for them and put their own name to it because it will usually result in sales regardless of how bad it is.Kat, the female police officer hangs out at a bar her dead father, also a policeman, used to frequent and sits on the stool he used. Her best friend, voluptuous and seductive, is a private investigator - but we don't really see her investigating anything. She is too busy flirting with men and when they approach her, rejecting them as unworthy. She is a caricature. A teenage boy's fantasy. Brandon, a precocious teenager seeks Kat out to help him find his missing mother and this is the basic plot of the tedious, plodding and lifeless story.It has a sprinkle of everything: The aforementioned well-endowed friend; a black homosexual cross-dresser (the only character even remotely interesting and fleshed out) a chain-smoking gravel-voiced mother in denial of her husband's other life, a boss with suspicious actions around her father's death, a vapid ex-lover who dumped her and -wait for it- she still loves and pursues. Then there are the evil monsters responsible for the kidnappings of many people. There are even zombie overtones with people in coffin-like boxes. The mafia don was a mere sketch and so vapid I couldn't believe why Coben didn't flesh him out at least a bit. None of these characters are engaging. They are like stick-people. The plot is improbable, the ending ridiculous and the entire book a failure that had so much potential.By the time I got to the predictable end, I couldn't care less what happened to any of them.Honestly, I have no ax to grind with one of my all-time favourite authors, but where the heck did this silly romance posturing as a thriller come from. Not from the pen of Coben unless he was channeling a teenager. I suppose this may have been an attempt to market the book to a YA audience while keeping his loyal readers in the process. It just didn't work. I paid nearly $20 for this and I regret not researching it since the sample seemed as if it might be ok. It wasn't. Two thumbs down.

One of those rare books that I found myself picking up at times other then my typical reading time. Tight, suspenseful and downright creepy. The final act alternates between 3 different action scenes with a perfect cadence that keeps you tearing through pages. I kept checking my Kindle to see how much was left so that I could slow down and savor it, but I couldn't--I burned through it very quickly, and am now going to check out some more of this author's work. Great book, very enjoyable.

Unlike many other more specific books or general banking books this one opens up a full picture of balance sheet management which is cornerstone in banking with very up to date specific coverage of current ALM challenges and insights. I would recommend for both a fresh practitioner or senior level executive with focus on treasury or finance / planning, risk, corporate banker and other business functions. I am glad I had a chance to work through it during an even more comprehensive course on bank treasury risk management performed by the author.

The book could be interested to practitioners. It has a lot of useful examples and templates. The most part of the book describes ALM practices and policies, other aspects of bank management are described rather briefly. You may need some financial management background to understand the material. Typos in the text add some difficulties to the comprehension of technical concepts.

Fantastic book! Great coverage on the principle risks and opportunities faced by a Bank. Would recommend this book as a refresher for experienced Bankers but also those breaking out in the industry looking to add more knowledge and skills to their armory !

I loved this book! I admit that it took a little while to get “hooked”, but I chalk that up to cultural differences. Because this is a Russian novel, the character names (and nicknames) are not ones that I am particularly familiar with. For several chapters, I found myself needing to re-read sections of the book to remind myself who was who. (Wait - was this the victim that was found by the river? Or the friend? Or that one police detective?). That said, the book is very clear; imagine being a Russian speaker trying to sort out that Bill and Bob are two different people BUT that they are the same two people as William and Robert. The primary characters were easy to figure out; I just needed refreshers for the less frequent characters.If you like murder mysteries, this is well worth the read. If you like psychological perspectives and profiles on different types of serial killers, this book is for you. If you know Moscow, Russia - you have mental images of the sites mentioned and where they are in geographical location to one another - you’ll love this book and find it to be both a quick read and a bit of a history lesson. (If you don’t have a working knowledge of Moscow but DO have one for Jerusalem, you’ll be one step ahead of the average North American reader when it comes to the symbology within the book.)I noticed one reviewer commenting that her only problem was with the translation of the book. She commented that “blini for breakfast just became pancakes...”; she felt that the “Russianness” of it had been lost. Curious, I googled “Russian blini”. The result? “Pancakes”. Granted, these common Russian breakfast items are more similar to crepes than what the average US citizen imagines a pancake to be. Still, that seems like a very fine line to ask a translator to navigate; do you emphasize the common-ness within the culture of a blini by using the word pancake? Or do you paint a more technically accurate picture by using the word crepe, thereby losing the cultural common-ness of a blini while your American readers imagine something fancy and typically reserved for either the wealthy or for special occasions? I personally like that the translator made the story more culturally relatable over choosing detailed technicality. While I may not have always had a perfect mental image, I feel that I was actually more in tune to the “Russianness” of the book due to the way the translator dealt with the text in this example. (Admittedly, I only have this example to use since I don’t speak Russian. I can imagine that there are other examples that this bilingual reviewer feels have not fully captured the “Russianness”.)In short, it took me longer than my norm to become fully “hooked”, but once I was, I stayed far too late reading into the wee hours of the morning. I’m looking forward to a translation of the sequel!

***I won this book via the Goodreads Giveaway program. This did not influence my review.***This is an intriguing book. It's a translation into English from Russian. The translation is well done and reads smoothly, which I appreciate.I liked the main character, Masha. That's good because the series will be based on her. I loved reading about the history of the building of Moscow and how it related to religion. There was a lot of great research in those sections of the book. I loved the depth and meaning behind the killings.I didn't like the lack of depth and the almost accidental portrayal of Masha figuring out the relationship between the killings - more attention could have been paid in the writing to showing how her brain works. I really didn't like the ending as Masha's point of view was lost and drowned out by the detective and the Sin Collector's points of view.This book definitely shows promise for the series and left me interested in reading Book 2.

Almost too complicated to be believable/viable. It's a Russian DaVinci Code. One of the drawbacks of reading on kindle is that you don't get illustrations. This is clearly a book where this would help the narrative in the description of old Moscow and 'Heavenly Jerusalem'. However, it's a good read with many twists and turns - do find out for yourself.

This novel hits the spot on so many levels. An intimate look at daily Moscow life, the interaction between Masha and her boss, a Russian history lesson, and the investigative process leading to a satisfying conclusion. The English translation is seamless.

This book is very informative. While small in size, about 80 pages give or take a few pages, it basically covers everything someone might need to know. What it is, what it's used for, what strain to use, how much, and how to take it. I would definitely recommend if you have a Kindle

Interesting subject poorly edited. Distracting because of so many mistakes. Certainly makes you wonder why scientific testing has been blocked. Is it a breakthrough medicine?

As someone researching kratom for pain as a replacement for prescriptions, I came across this short book. I have had multiple neck surgeries and have had a love/hate relationship with prescription painkillers. It was informative about our body's reaction to kratom and about dosing depending on your needs. I would recommend to anyone looking into kratom.

There is a lot to know about kratom, and this book provides a good starting point. While I appreciated the information it provided, I was disappointed in what was absent. I am looking at kratom as a possible aid in controlling pain from arthritis, something I expect is a common use for kratom. A critical concern for me relates to interactions with other substances, including both medications and supplements. That was inadequately addressed, with the book suggesting things like not combining with medications and supplements. Let’s be realistic. By the time I am looking for alternative pain medications, it is not surprising that I am taking a half dozen medications for various maladies, and using a variety of supplements. I appreciate that the book must limit its scope to some reasonable range, but it appears to promote kratom as “safe” without even pointing to a source for information on potentially dangerous interactions.

Very informative as others have stated. There is a lot to know about it and this is not exhaustive.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the Drew from this book, and although Tara and I are no longer together I’ve met all of the key figures in this book on many occasions. Although I don’t have as intimate a knowledge of growing up in the Westover family as a sibling would, I observed first hand everything Tara describes in the third part of the book and heard many stories about earlier events, not just from Tara, but from siblings, cousins, and her parents themselves. I find the claims of factual inaccuracy that have come up among these reviews to be strange for two reasons. First, in a post-James Frey (“A Million Little Pieces”) world, publishers are incredibly careful with memoirs and “Educated” was extensively fact checked before publication. Second, no one claiming factual inaccuracy can do so with any precision. While every Westover sibling, as well as their neighbors and friends, will have different perspectives and different memories, it is very difficult to dispute the core facts of this book. “Educated” is about abuse, and the way in which both abusers and their enablers distort reality for the victims. It’s about the importance of gaining your own understanding of the world so you’re not dependent on the narratives imposed on you by others. I’ve heard Tara’s parents attack schools and universities, doctors and modern medicine, but more importantly, I’ve seen her parents work tirelessly to create a world where Shawn’s abuse was minimized or denied outright. I’ve seen them try to create a world where Tara was insane or possessed in order to protect a violent and unstable brother. I was with her in Cambridge when Shawn was calling with death threats, then saw her mother completely trivialize the experience. For Tara’s parents, allegiance to the family is paramount, and allegiance to the family requires you to accept her father’s view of the world, where violence is acceptable and asking for change is a crime.

I highly recommend this book about a girl whose childhood began on a beautiful mountain in a narrow world created by her father’s anti-establishment mindset of fear, insanity, and control and ended when she decided to venture out into the wider world and research the facts for herself. Will she come home? Can she come home? Or will home be more damaging to her spirit than the broader dangerous world her father fears? I will try not to give spoilers, but most of the information in this review was provided by the book’s author in interviews. It’s not the bare facts which are so fascinating, but the story itself and how it plays out. If you’ve ever been gaslighted, scapegoated or lied about by your own family, you will find in Tara Westover a true kindred spirit.The title of this book might give the impression it’s merely about going to school. While the author’s lack of primary education is offset by her future ability to earn a doctorate at Cambridge, her education about society and the world outside her family is just as important as her rise academically.You might say Tara Westover’s education started while she was very young. Her life began on an Idaho mountain with survivalist parents. A father who distrusts the government and runs an ever-spreading scrap yard. A mother who is practically coerced by her husband to become a midwife. Born the youngest in a family of seven, her mother must’ve burned out on homeschooling by the time Tara came along because she didn’t get much book learning. Her first level of education included prepping with her family for the time of desolation, dodging her father’s careless flung scrap metal while she does child labor in his junkyard and accompanying her mother to home births. Tara’s early survivalist education includes learning how to survive her parents’ ignorant choices and a bullying older brother—all of which are much greater threats than her father’s perceived threats of the government taking over their lives.Her parents rarely leave the mountain. They are home-birthers, home-schoolers, anti-vaxers, anti-establishment and anti-medical care. In a nutshell, her father seems nutso—more like a deranged lunatic with a massive stockpile of weapons than a father.Tara’s mother appears to be her husband’s enabler as she meekly follows suit and rationalizes his unhealthy choices even when they threaten her safety and the health of her children. As a matter of fact, for a woman who eventually created a lucrative business by claiming to be a healer by designing her own line of essential oils, her mother’s only safety instinct seems to be to protect the family secrets.As Tara watched the insanity and chaos of her parents’ poor choices, she had one example of life beyond the mountain. One older brother left home and went to college. He encouraged her to do the same. This book is about her quest to get out from under her father’s control—first physically, then emotionally and eventually spiritually. This process didn’t happen overnight. As anyone who has grown up under a narcissistic parent and knows what it’s like to be bullied and gaslighted will find it easy to relate to Tara’s journey.This memoir is the story of a girl who was thirsty for knowledge, got a sip of real truth and refused to drink the kool-aid any longer. It’s the story if being scapegoated and gaslighted until she questions her sanity. It’s sad, but this book is also about the loss of siblings who would prefer to vote the family line than treat their sister as a friend. It’s also a story of triumph about the girl who escaped the box she was expected to stay in and become the one who got away from all the drama and insanity of her family of origin.It’s incredible that Tara Westover succeeded in getting a doctorate from Cambridge, but even more amazing is her social education and how she eventually transformed like Pygmalion and was able to self-differentiate from her parents and choose the life she desired for herself.This book is an exciting read. I read it around the clock within two days. It’s also complicated enough to provoke intellectual discourse about what it means to be faithful to oneself and how loyalty to family plays out against self-worth and self-knowledge.This memoir is the fourth book I’ve reviewed about a woman raised in a fundamentalist Mormon family. The first three were all brought up in polygamous households, but Tara only had two parents who kept their family in the local ward despite her father’s concerns about the Illuminati infiltrating the mainstream Mormon church. This family looks Mormon from the outside, but a more sinister agenda lies under the surface. She makes it clear this is NOT a book about Mormons but rather the head-spinning tale of a dysfunctional family. She reminds us that most Mormons send their children to public school and go to the doctor when it seems necessary. The fundamentalist vibes which are all there, under a cloak of self-righteousness, could be manifested within any denomination or cult.The only thing that made this book uncomfortable for me to read was the descriptions of the terrible injuries this family continually sustained due to the father’s stupidity. I constantly cringed at these stories much like I would while watching a show about life-threatening emergencies. Even worse, her father truly believed all these near death injuries were ordained by his arbitrary version of God. It was all I could do to keep from screaming. Such vivid descriptions were necessary though for the reader to understand what Tara had to endure.It’s not much of a spoiler to say Tara is eventually going to go no contact with some of her family members. She has told this in interviews. What is impressive about Tara is that she shows no bitterness. She loves her parents and family but has chosen to separate from them as a boundary for her sanity. Or did they shun her first? As in most narcissistic family survivor stories, it’s often hard to tell.This memoir is a true survival story about surviving a survivalist mindset. This book is the tale of narcissistic, emotional and spiritual abuse and one girl’s victory in becoming herself despite being vilified and gaslighted. My favorite quote from the book sums up Tara’s journey,“I am not the child my father raised, but he is the father who raised her.” -Tara WestoverTara’s story is a victory of education, but even more, it’s a triumph of her courage to rise up beyond the mountain—the only home she ever had to find her authentic home within herself. Bravo Tara Westover! You are an amazing survivor! Thank you for documenting your often painful journey so the rest of us can know that although our stories may vary, we are not alone.

I was enthralled and moved by this powerful memoir. The author grew up in a survivalist family in Idaho, the youngest child. She was not homeschooled---instead, she simply didn't go to school at all, due to her father's mistrust of public schools. Her family didn't believe in modern medicine. Instead, her mother was an herbalist and midwife. Her father owned a junkyard. Her childhood is affected over and over by serious injuries of family members, injuries which are not treated.As Tara gets into her preteen and teen years, one older brother in particular starts tormenting her, and the tormenting rises to the level of hugely severe abuse. In part in response to this, she decides to go to college, and by pretty much sheer force of will, does well enough on the ACT to get into Brigham Young University. From there, she starts a storied college career and eventually gets a doctorate from Cambridge. However, each time she is drawn back to the her family, her brother's abuse continues, and the family denial turns more and more severe. The memoir becomes a story of her internal struggle---to believe her own version of her life and to have the strength to break away from her past.I've struggled with some issues of my own in remembering the past differently than others, and I well know the feeling that the author has over and over. One line, "reality becomes fluid", hit me very hard. When you know something happened a certain way, but others can't accept that reality and attempt to change the past by denying it---Tara Westover is able to write about this so powerfully I was crying at points.I hope this book gets wide readership. It's an amazing glimpse into a way of life that most of us will never know, and an inspiring story of one woman's ability to change her future.
