I've got a Home in Glory Land is well researched. Karolyn Smardz Frost writes in a very readable form which is important for an academic history book. As we watch the 150th anniversary Civil War events this year, the subject of slavery in the United States is even more important. This book chronicles this dark and shameful chapter in our past. The author uses real stories debunking the myths of African-American inferiority. She tells part of the untold story about what happened to slaves who did escape to Canada. We all know Freedom Seekers followed the Drinking Gourd north, but what happened when they got North? This book answers that question. My great grandmother Anna Maria Jackson a slave (mentioned in my friend Karolyn Smardz Frost's book) came through the UGRR with her 7 children from Milford, DE..William Still documented her journey...she eventually ended up living in Toronto with the Blackburns until the end of her life..I have much information about her and one of her sons Albert Calvin Whitley Jackson who will be honored in Toronto in March 2013 by the Toronto postal Union as he was the first black postman in Toronto amid much racial tension there back in the late 1800's. There will also be an event in April 2013 where he is being honored with a lane in Toronto being named after him. There are a few of us black Canadians that have stories and pictures of our ancestors past lives as slaves, their journeys thru the UGRR and settlement in various parts of Canada. My ancestors settled in the Toronto area.R.McDowell

Amazing read. Deeply researched. While it is factual, it reads like a novel. A must read for anyone trying to understand this era in time.

Even tough it's a used audiobook, it's in great shape. The story is compelling as well.

I didn't purchase this book.

Although there was sometimes too much background information, the story was compelling and interesting. Two "ordinary" people whose actions and the consequences of those actions helped shape the future of sanctuary for former slaves in Canada. The story is really pre-underground railroad.

As a young person, I would often ask "what happened to the people who took the Underground Railroad"? Frost's splendid book provides one of the answers. We are indebted to her years of research and writing!

I must say that this is a beautiful book; well researched and very well documented. A moving story of almost lost history unbeknownst to most Americans and Canadians in today's world."I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad" is the historical record of Thornton Blackburn, a slave who belonged to a great grandmother of mine, Susan Talbot Brown. This is the actual story of his escape to Canada with his wife, Ruthie (later Lucy).Needless to say, finding out that one of my relatives owned slaves in Kentucky made this story even more relevant and poignant for me. Why would anybody want to read a book on militant Islam in Central Asia?Many would argue that central Asia is a side show in the war on terror.It is not a side show, however.Militant Islam in Central Asia is linked to militant Islam in South Asia and beyond.Consider the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).The IMU was founded in 1998.The IMU's initial target were the dictators of Central Asia.The Taliban allowed the IMU to set up training camps in Northern Afghanistan.Osama Bin Laden provided funding.From 1999 to 2001 the IMU helped the Taliban and Al Qaeda to fight the Northern Alliance in Northern Afghanistan.In May 2001, Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban, reportedly transferred the command of the infamous brigade 55 (consisting of foreigners fighting under Taliban command) from Osama Bin Laden to the IMU.When the coalition invaded Afghanistan in late 2001, the IMU, brigade 55, Al Qaeda and Taliban fought side by side.Some IMU fighters may have participated in the battle of Tora Bora in December 2001.Almost certain is that elements of the IMU, brigade 55 and Al Qaeda fought in Operation Anaconda in March 2002, one of the most ferocious engagements in Afghanistan to date.Most surviving members of the IMU went to South Waziristan.There, Yuldashev, the charismatic leader of the IMU, became a wanted speaker in local mosques and incited the tribals to jihad.The IMU started the war on Pakistan in 2002.As the greatest ally of Al Qaeda in Waziristan, the IMU was indispensable.It was, it seems, instrumental in the rise of the Pakistani Taliban (as the Pakistani Taliban themselves admitted).One Pakistani army officer said that the IMU is the key to Waziristan.Some parts of the IMU seem to plan terror attacks in Germany and other parts of Europe.These days, the IMU and the Pakistani Taliban fight Pakistan, the IMU seems to plot terrorist attacks in Europe, is the muscle of the Afghan Taliban in Northern Afghanistan,and helps Al Qaeda to put pressure on the Northern supply line of the coalition forces. And, on top of that, the IMU seems to be increasingly active in Central Asia, in particular Tajikstan.In short, militant Islam in Central Asia and South Asia is tied.The dictators of Uzbekistan and the rest of Central Asia, and the backing of those dictators by the coalition, generates instability and fuels militancy in Central Asia as well as South Asia.This book is one of the few that have to say anything about it.It is outdated, written in 2000, but there is not much else on the topic and it is a good starting point.

Ahmed Rashid's "Taliban" was a more entertaining read, but "Jihad" is perhaps the more important contribution. Central Asia still means nothing to Americans today, but our children will wonder why we were so careless and inattentive as the failed "...stans" turned into breeding grounds of terror and extremism on our watch.My favorite quote from this book is one by a Pakistani scholar who warns, "A failed state is not a dying state, although it can be that too. A failed state is one in which failure of policies is never considered sufficient reason to reconsider them." How well that applies, not only to Central Asia, but Pakistan, the EU, and even the current American administration. At least we all may now be reaching the lowest common denominator.

Yes, there is militant Islam in central Asia...or are there militants who happen to be Islam in central Asia fighting against repressive governments? This book will not answer the question, but will allow you to realize there is more to this phenomenon than just what we see on cable news in the middle east. While it has good information, the author's style is a bit text book like and may warrant smaller doses than you might be used to reading in one sitting.

I really enjoyed this book. All of Ahmed Rashid's books are great. If you're interested in central Asia, war, extremist groups, and the general goings on when it comes to geopolitics, military history, and current events... I recommend all Mr. Rashid's books.

Rashid is as knowledgeable and clear in his writing on Central Asia and the Middle East as anyone I have read.

Well, maybe a mystery where instead of solving a murder kids actually trying to cover it up...Yes, MUCH better and wa-a-ay more entertaining!"The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place" by Julie Berry is just as fantastic as the cover promises, and as intriguing as the name suggests. We're usually so accustomed to solving murders, that meeting a bunch of young ladies who actually try to act like nothing happened is a particularly delicious and enjoyable twist. Who knew burying people in the garden and planting a tree on top could be so much fun?At the very beginning we're presented with a set of characters (through their small autobiographies) that will be our companions for the rest of the story. Personally, I liked this feature of the book very much; it allowed us a glimpse of the girls' upbringing, since we never get to see the actual families (the whole action happens in the school for girls), and, therefore, add our own reflections on their personalities. At first, meeting them all at once might be slightly confusing, but they all gain defined voices quickly, so after a few chapters there is no mistaking one for the other. Wonderful job on Julie Berry's part! The setting is fantastic. This is a variation of locked-room mystery, so an all-girl school set in the Victorian era is about as perfect as it gets. It is easy to picture yourself there, being an invisible guest at Birthday party, or watching girls propping up “Mrs. Plackett” in her room. The school rapidly becomes integral part of the story.As far as the mystery itself goes – it is a good one. Not the kind that will make your “break” your head in search of a killer and then still be surprised at the end, but a good, solid one; where things fit together and make sense. I also appreciate a rather complex ending here; not just “killer=bad, girls=good“ simplicity, but rather slightly more realistic, if humorous, take on the subject.All in all, the characters are what truly makes “The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place” shine. They are different and opinionated, yet united in their love for each other, making for wonderful companions in this charming (if I may) murder case. As a matter of fact, I liked the book so much that I also purchased an audio version of it, and I must tell you Jayne Entwistle did a fantastic job in giving each girl a distinct voice. Either form (audio or paper) of this fun, engaging story will sure to bring delight to readers of any age – enjoy!

The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place – the title of this novel rolls off the tongue quite deliciously, does it not? Within its pages, Julie Berry spins a tale full of hilarity and hijinks. In fact, it’s really a worthy “British farce”, to use the author’s own term. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place was seriously funny and clever, and I enjoyed it so.The plot is reminiscent of the game Clue, albeit a version that’s twisted and backwards. The girls are determined to be free and independent, and so, band together to cover up the two deaths in their home. However, they’re also working to protect themselves, and that involves solving the mystery – who, how, why. The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place constantly amused me, as there are shenanigans and characters aplenty to take in.Of the main seven girls, Smooth Kitty was my absolute favorite. She’s basically the ringleader of the sisterhood, calm, unruffled and with a very practical take charge attitude. I did enjoy each of the other girls too: Pocked Louise (resident sleuth & scientist), Dour Elinor (who had a macabre fascination with death), Dear Roberta (clever mind + delicate constitution), Dull Martha (simple but kind), Stout Alice (an actress in the making), and Disgraceful Mary-Jane (a flirt but also very optimistic). Together, these seven offered various contributions to their charade – and they were all just really fun to read about.Sprinkled with other interesting personalities (dead and alive, mind you), laugh out loud moments and so-fantastical-as-to-probably-be-implausible-but-let’s-go-with-it-anyway situations, The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place was a serious delight. It was definitely a fun reading experience! I believe many other readers (younger and older alike) would be thoroughly charmed by these girls and this novel, so consider it one I’d highly recommend!

This book seems to have been sadly overlooked among readers and reviewers alike. I am partial to whimsy and this fine book has plenty. I REALLY hope Julie has another adventure planned for the Scandalous Sisterhood. I bought the Kindle version, hardcopy, and softcopy I liked it so much. Definitely one I'll read again!

This book was nominated for a number of awards and I can see why. It looks you with a murder within the first page and doesn't let you go until the culmination of events at the end. If you like hilarious, well-written mysteries, this one's for you!

This book was really fun to read. I was sorry to see it end. I've read a couple of other books by this author, which I enjoyed, but this one is totally different. It is a completely unbelievable, hilarious farce. But in the silliest part of my heart, I wished it could be a true story.Picture Jane Austin on laughing gas.Definitely worth the purchase price and then some.

The story is well written, clever, funny, and very entertaining. I enjoyed it.

I haven't actually read this but our 15 year old was not able to put it down, even reading it through meals, skipping xbox to read.

The characters are a delightful mix of kindness, cunning, innocence, and duplicity. I adore each and every one of the young ladies. I look forward to reading more in this series; the crime and it's resolution were well done.
