I first used the Lonely Planet in the 1980's when traveling in India, and now that I am taking my family to India in 2018, I wouldn't plan the trip without it. This latest addition is packed with practical, detailed, interesting information. We continue to refer to it as we create our adventure! Thank you to the many contributors for your priceless input! I am so excited to introduce India to those I love.

While I understand that India is (sub-)continent and thus any travel book needs to cover a lot -- but this is book is not suitable to have it with you when you finally go. I have relied on the Lonely Plant series for 20+ years traveling to over 40 countries ..... but this might be the last one. Too much info about accusations (hotels etc.) that by definition are out dated by the time of print --- much better to use online review sites. The book misses out on more details for interesting places to visit. Would be just 20% of pages with out hotels and restaurants and then it would be indeed usual while traveling.

As with most Lonely Planet books, this one is great at giving a thourough overview of every major region, and gives some wonderful suggestions on all aspects of travelling. One warning: Like the country, this book is very large: close to 900 pages. It takes up lots of space in a carryon bag, but is worth it.

Everything was available online. Kinda useless on my trip. Left it in India. Really Really heavy. Wanted to bring home stuff, not this heavy unnecessary book. Get the kindle if you must.

Great guide for our family. I used this book throughout our trip to India and it was very helpful and easy to use. I always find Lonely Planet history sections to be valuable and this edition is no exception. It provides easy to read and understand background information on history, buildings, culture, etc. It is a hefty book, but I didn't find it too cumbersome to keep on hand.

Great guide like all the others Lonely Planet has.

Still useful but size is restrictive and information not quite as accurate as in past.Overall still one of best.

The book is enormous and very good, it has recommendations of almost anything you can need during the trip.

This is, by far, the best synthesis of The Hero's Journey, i.e. the individuation journey, I have ever read. The author has a kind of pure god-given genius for being able to take all this enormous material, from Jung, to Nietsche, to Star Wars, to myth in general, to Joseph Campbell, to Eastern and Western approaches, to dreams, to the Goddess, and somehow weave it into a beautiful narrative that does not veer off into abstraction or mire one in a tar pit of academic jargon. It is at once accessible and yet, very deep. He also manages to include parts of his own journey without it becoming tediously autobiographical.Even for those of us who know this material well, Le Grice manages to remind us in a new way of the depth, breadth and importance of the journey, both personally and collectively. In that sense, it is truly enlightening. And perhaps most importantly of all, it brings hope without sacrificing truth. Hope for us individually, and hope for humanity.As a woman, the book holds a particular and special significance. This is the first time I've felt comfortable stepping up and claiming The Hero Myth for myself. Although privately I always felt a certain kinship and understanding, I was never comfortable claiming it for myself before because of the gendered language around it. That discomfort fell away for me largely because of the author's unique ability to acknowledge and then move beyond the gender stereotypes and open wide the door. He consistently reminds the reader that this is the individuation journey, for men and women alike. He doesn't patronize, either with content or with language. So while the book is terribly important for the masculine, from my perspective, it also provides an invitation, a doorway and a mythological foundation for women as we go on our individuation journeys. That's quite tricky to do. Even Joseph Campbell could not do it, because being necessarily a man of his time, he believed the journey was exclusively a male one. If I have one piece of feedback, it would be simply that I wish the chapter "A Note on Gender" could have been the preface. On the other hand, not many of us read prefaces so perhaps it's best left where it is.Finally, a note on the writing. Good writing matters, particularly in more scholarly treatments of a well-known subject. It really does. Le Grice does not disappoint. His capacity for synthesis is matched by his capacity with language -- lyrical yet concise, wholehearted yet never flamboyant. It is rare these days when a scholarly book is upheld as much by the language as the content, and that is the case here. In many places, the book reads like a great novel and was hard to put down, even for me, who knows the story well! In fact, a small confession: I have copied the last few pages, beginning with Hospitality to the Gods, and have the pages taped to the wall above my desk. There is such integration and hope there, as well as important reminders, summed up beautifully in these lines: "As individuation proceeds, however, your individual freedom, in one form, has to be given up. Your freedom, thereafter, depends on how you respond to the creative impulses emerging from your depths, which do not originate from your own conscious volition. … Individuation is the process by which you become reconciled to this loss of freedom."

LeGrice's book is a helpful guide for those that find themselves - bidden or unbidden - on a journey away from the materialistic as well as nihilistic worldview so prevalent in post-modernity toward realization of the Self and to the greater consciousness, psychological wholeness, and spiritual insight that it entails. He draws on the work of many trailblazers whose work is often difficult but essential to the task of the Hero and renders them accessible to those who might not otherwise be able to make use of them. He writes from a point of view of an experienced traveler and not that of a dry academic and yet his scholarship is readily apparent. So when you, if you are so blessed (or cursed!), have the realization that the Hero is not something external to you but rather inward journey through your own Psyche then I believe that you will find this work a worthy companion for your journey.

Another fabulous book by this author. This book should be studied in all high schools so youth could be exposed to some deep knowledge and wisdom not currently included in schools' curricula, alas!

I really enjoyed this book. It brings together phiolosphy, religion and science into thinking about myth and it's role in life today. It makes it apparent that we are missing out by not having good myths in our lives today. It is a bit of a tough read at first, but well worth sticking out to the end.

Well organized, clearly written, did not assume prior knowledge, and connected myth and our world today. I am using it as a text in my group sessions and lectures.

A unique understanding of things.And much more : "hope", for instance, because in spite of the difficult times we are going through as a species, KLG shows where all of this might be leading to.We seriously NEED that kind of overview, that kind of understanding of our predicament, to be able to go on with our lives in a meaningful way.So, thanks Keiron, for this new book of yours !

I have worked for the federal government for many years and, unfortunately, what the author says is consistent with my own experience. I was shocked to see the level of dishonesty and corruption in the way the government conducts and funds "science." While I have great faith in the scientific method when practiced correctly, I have come to have very little faith in the integrity of our scientific establishment as it exists today, especially the biomedical sciences. This lack of scientific integrity is very damaging to our society.What might be the saddest and most frightening thing, though, is that those who try to point out and expose this lack of integrity are so often attacked as being anti-science. In fact, the opposite is true: they want honest, objective science.I commend the author for his courage and his commitment to being a true "public servant," even at the expense of his own career.

This book is for everyone. Scientists, academia, farmers, rural and urban residents need to know how a nationwide waste management program can impact the health of everyone, but especially children. Dr. Davis takes us inside the US Environmental Protection Agency and how the scientists there have been silenced by corporate interests by political mandates to make all environmental policies under a "cost-benefit analysis." Unfortunately, the only "person" who will benefit from this method of regulatory decisions will be corporate interests and local governments. This book uncovers the dirty secrets that allows toxic sewage sludge municipal waste to be spread and sprayed on farmlands that may grow your food or food for the animals you eat. Nobody is exempt from the impacts of thousands of synthetic chemicals mixed together and condensed in the sewage sludge that may even be taken to another "Class A" level that will allow this toxic mixture to be put in your garden, your yard, the school playgrounds, parks, and all public places. The EPA was under pressure by Congress to quickly find a way for municipalities to get rid of their sewage sludge that was being dumped into the oceans. When condoms, needles, and other items started washing ashore in NJ, the folks got right angry. Congressional investigation showed that the places that the sewage was dumped into the ocean were dying and marine life was nil. So, the EPA Administration, without the backing and approval of their own scientists in the Office of Research and Development, decided sewage sludge that killed marine life would be good as fertilizer for farmland in 1993.This book tells about what happens when scientists with honor and integrity try to stand up to EPA Administration and government to try to protect human health. The scientists are fired, maligned, sued, and generally given the boot. However, heroes come in all shapes and sizes and Dr. Lewis is one of our nation's heroes. Not only did he discover that dental equipment was not being cleaned sufficiently to kill HIV and other pathogens and get dentists world wide to change procedures for sterilizing instruments, he became a whistleblower after being fired from the EPA after 30 years of outstanding scientific contributions. This gentle, soft spoken very intelligent man deserves our kudos and respect while we figure out how to protect ourselves from the toxic environment the EPA has mandated for disposal of municipal sewage sludge that impacts our air, water, and food.

Having experienced the rath of our EPA on our "Organic Enzyme Cleaner" and sent to virtual bankruptcy, this book is telling the truth regarding how our government is not the government that We The People believe it to be... it is constructed of agencies directly and indirectly loyal to and responsible to US CORPORATIONS! Great read and truthful read!

Great information, but terrible editing. The author is very repetitive about the biosolids issue. Thus, it wasn't very enjoyable to read. However, it's still an important book about our government's dishonesty and corruption in how it destroys the careers of scientists who dare to investigate the safety of some of it's practices. Much of this book is reminiscent of Marie-Monique Robin's "The World According to Monsanto" where the government destroyed the careers of scientists who investigated glyphosate safety.Dr. Lewis does seem to side with Dr. Wakefield and how he was (perhaps unfairly) ousted, but just because Dr. Wakefield was considered a fraud does that mean that nobody is daring to do any further research into vaccine safety? That seems troubling to me, especially because I personally know 2 people who have gotten Guillain-Barre syndrome from vaccines (one was from a H1N1 flu shot that was rushed into production in the 2009-2010 flu season scare, and another who got GBS from a tetanus vaccine after slicing her foot on a seashell), and I do NOT have a wide social circle. GBS isn't so rare if I know 2 people with it, but it's disturbing that no scientists are even testing vaccines for safety, as the matter is already settled.Nevertheless, I recommend this book! Just skim through the repetitive parts.

Very good book. Unfortunately I'm no longer surprised by government corruption. I'm glad this scientist had the strength to question the status quo, which is to dump chemicals that are illegal to dump into water or air, into our soil instead! They put chemicals in mulch, on playgrounds, on farms. Holy hell what are people thinking? The pull towards the dollar must be very strong in a lot of people. I like Suzie Ormond s comment best....people first, then money. If every one lived that way, we wouldn't have to fight so hard for clear air, water, soil etc.
