I went on a self help book buying spree this July, after my beloved baby 'Buddy' crossed the Rainbow Bridge into the afterlife. My grief was (still IS) so powerful and overwhelming that I couldn't imagine being happy or enjoying my life at all after losing him. He was my companion of 16 years. Every single day for 16 years. We traveled from Ohio to NYC, back to Ohio, then to Salt Lake City, to Palm Springs, to Dayton, OH to Cleveland, and then almost to Atlanta where I live now. 2 weeks prior to my move here, his pain became so intense that I knew what I HAD to do, and it was the worst experience of my life! Omg I cried and cried and cried and cried. I don't think I've ever cried so hard. He was my best friend. It's been a little over 60 days now, and I'm ok, but I knew I was going to need things to read to put the loss of him into perspective. This book helped me to achieve this. I hope if you've lost a pet, that you'll find things to read that might help you. Know that you're not alone in your grief. I'm still in a great deal of emotional pain, but ... knowing that he's ok now, and knowing that he would want me to be ok too, helps me keep on keeping on. He's somewhere beautiful, and peaceful... and so is your beloved pet. Know that, please. Other books that I've read that have been helpful include: Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates, by Gary Kurtz - Wagging Tails in Heaven, by Gary Kurz - Signs From Pets in the Afterlife, by Lyn Ragan - Life After Life, by Raymond A. Moody Jr., M.D. - A Time to Grieve, by Carol Staudacher - Journey of Souls, by Michael Newton, PH.D. Some of these books are aimed particularly at the thought of us humans having an afterlife. I firmly believe that if we have an afterlife, then so does every living creature, ESPECIALLY our beautiful, precious, beloved pets.

My beloved cat, who had been in chronic renal failure for about a year, took a sudden turn. My vet said there was not much more we could do and that I could have one more night with him if I wasn't quite ready to let go. As he slept, I downloaded this book to my kindle. It provides straight-forward information on coping with grief, making decisions with respect to euthanasia/burial/cremation, seeking support, dealing with non-animal people who just don't get it etc. I found it to provide comfort to me on that last day and I felt prepared the following day, which allowed me to really focus on being relevant for my little bear in his final moments. I'm still reading it and working through my broken heart, but this book is really helping me. I hope it provides you with some comfort as well.

There are no words to express how much this book helped me. I lost my beloved Shih Tzu Lila two weeks ago and I went through every emotion possible.A friend recommended me to look up some help online and that's when I came across this book. All the other options were more about the afterlife aspect of death which wasn't a concern for me as an atheist, I wanted to find something about the grieving process to try to understand what was I going through. The Pet Loss Companion not only has the professional aspect of grieving but also the sentimental part of it because you can literally feel how much both authors and the cases they used loved their own pets. What they went through is exactly how I'm feeling. It has an incredibly positive message, it explains that how we feel equals the love we felt and the authors give a fantastic advice: "(...) we hope you allow yourself to imagine a moment sometime in the future. In that moment some time from now, you'll know that to have loved so fully means you have received one of the most special gifts that life grants us".Right now, after having finished the book I feel as if I understand myself a lot more, I understand what I'm going through and this allows me to take care of myself and to give me time to heal and for that, I'll forever be grateful to Ken and Nancy. And like I told Ken, I hope to find it in spanish someday so I can give it to my family and friends!

First off, I really did love this book! I recently put down my black lab of 12 Years due to an age-related health issue. Easily the most heart-wrenching thing I've ever gone through in my 46 years of living! I do want to say that I'm a Christian, I believer in life beyond our own.My life is not only spent studying all aspects of Christianity, but other belief systems as well. I've read science, and also psychology interests me as well. That said, The Pet Loss companion is best for someone who has no starting point! This isn't bad, I just think it's meant for those who thoughts might be all over the place; and in all honesty, no book will make you not cry. No book will make your beloved friend come back to you. This is ok. The first realization is your friend is gone. The 2nd realization for me was that my sweet girl became something that will never leave me...a cherished memory. This book shares the authors cherished memories which in turn brought back memories of my childhood golden retriever, my rabbit, and the many cars over the years, again in fondness not pain or hurt. Some stories will make you laugh or cry. Others left me scratching my head. What I would have liked would have been a chapter called " I'm still here: How to love other pets that are left after your loss" My yellow lab has always been an independent spirit, the loss if his "sister" didn't change that. I don't want to spend my remaining time with him worrying. I'm learning how to live as a one dog house, because I will one day be a zero dog house. Which brings to mind the BEST chapter " When to get a new pet" IF your hurting, get this book NOW. It was crucial to my healing, hopefully it will be for yours too. God bless, and I pray your heart heals from your loss.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this book. While in the throws of grieving I began reading and the sick feeling in my stomach went away. You get it. Many on this earth do not. Thank you for this healing companion book. Bless you!
